Analyzing the LB position after Vilma's suspension

LINK

quote:

The trade to acquire Vilma from the New York Jets will go down as one of the best trades in club history. When healthy and younger, Vilma was indeed one of the top middle linebackers in the game. His speed, athleticism, coverage skills, sure tackling ability and leadership was something this team had not had in the lineup since Sam Mills occupied that middle spot in the late 1980s' and 1990s

IDK if its stretching it. He didnt claim Vilma to be the best, I would say he was one of the best in the game when he was in his prime.

He was in the top 10.
(Not in order) Patrick Willis, Ray Lewis, DeMeco Ryans, Jon Beason, Brian Urlacher, Johnathan Vilma, Jerod Mayo. Who else? London Fletcher? David Harris? Bart Scott? AJ Hawk? EJ Henderson?

I definitely think we will miss him more than people think and not taking away anything from Lofton. It would be nice to haver him in case someone gets injured as well.

To me Lofton is a better overall traditional MLB. Vilma was always undersized, but what separated him was his smarts and coverage ability.

I think Lofton is an upgrade right now. Vilma is hurt and not the same guy he was two years ago.

Like I said before, Vilma sitting out a year may be a good thing health wise for him and when he comes back, he needs to split time 70:30 to keep himself as a viable player in the NFL.

You couldn't have watched a single game if you don't think Vilma was top 10 at his position in his prime!

My Evidence Your Honor

Vilma was certainly one of best in his prime.

If he would have had a better d line here in NO to keep guards from reaching the 2nd level so he could have played in space more he would have been top 3 IMO
