Who here absolutely loved 311 at one time but now can't stand the shitty songs they pump out to fill an album (if you can even call an 8 track cd a whole album). I grew up loving them and have seen them over 30 times live. But today I can't stand to hear their new stuff because it makes me sick to think the same people who wrote Music and Grassroots can come up with garbage that is Uplifter and Universal Pulse. I know bands grow and evolve but this is the reverse of evolution. As a once die hard fan, I used to get mad when people bashed them, but now I completely get it.

I don't hate 311. I just got bored with them. I know a chick that is a total diehard 311 fan who goes to every 311 day. It's kind of weird to me.

Anyway, bands are destined to hit a wall and become far less creative. They seem to have hit that wall.

I really loved 311 back in the day. Grassroots didn't come out my cd player my entire 10th grade year of HS. I wouldn't say I hate then now, but I haven't bought an album since the 311 album and I would be hard press to name any song after that album.

I went to every 311 day prior to the Vegas shows. I loved everything through Soundsystem. I like From Chaos but that took time to grow on me. After that it got worse each time. There are some good bsides which kinda annoy me because the songs on the album suck. I went to the Pow Wow festival last summer and that was my breaking point. When they played the entire universal pulse album I just said screw it. I don't have any faith in them creating good music again. A lot of people quit trying after the blue album which made no sense because Transister was great. But without cocaine, it looks like they can't write good music anymore.

No doubt, Grass Roots and Music where of another kind of Monster, even different from thier first few albums that a lot of people don't know about. The blue album was good, but I saw the trend start.

The big difference is much less rapping and guitar licks. I once saw someone go through all thier albums and showed how the rappings got less through the years.

But today 311 is love or hate b/c thier music evloved, but my question is, what band hasn't.
Metallica did and while they have lost a lot of faithfull followers, I don't see as much a split with 311 fans. I can go on, Staind, Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, Green Day, ect...... It's all the same.

I have no love lost for thier music today, it's not what it was, but like I said not many bands keep that first impression very long anyway.

And if they had continued to rap everyone would be laughing at the 40 year old white guys still trying to rap.

I totally agree with this.

They still put on a hell of a live show and I really am excited about tonight and tomorrow at the HOB in NO.

311 didn't make the sellout moves that those other bands, save PJ, did. That's the difference. I don't get the impression that 311 changed to sell more albums. They just evolved. I can respect that.

I'll be there tuesday night at the HOB. I cant wait!

there new music has evolved and I'm ok with that. I still find a lot of there new stuff pretty solid.

From Chaos is a badass album and I don't care who disagrees.

Not uncommon to have taste in music change drastically from your HS years on...

Also, some bands have a finite number of albums in them until they turn to shite... you hate to admit it, but its true.

Ive never been a fan, but can remember the line going down Chimes street in the 90s to see them at the Varsity...

I love all of their stuff. While I'll admit I listen to the newer albums less than the earlier stuff... From Chaos still finds its way into my cd players more than Music and Grassroots.

I don't even see it as evolution of music. Its lazy writing of lyrics and way too cheesy. Pearl Jam lost followers but their music is still deep, talented, and progressing. 311 decided around From Chaos that they would tour non stop and put out new music often. They just forgot to make it good.

If you listen to "Waiting", you will see how little time it took to write that crap. It's evident on all of Universal Pulse as well. I lost respect for that reason alone.

Huge 311 fan here. Seen them plenty of times live including 311 day 2004. I love all their albums besides "Don't Tread on Me and Universal Pulse". I liked Uplifter, they had some good ones and some bad ones though. I agree with other posters on here that they have evolved. That happens alot when a group stays together for a long time.

Me. I think a lot of their earlier fans have just out grown them if I'm being honest.

Pretty much. Music was great and Grassroots was good. 311 had a couple of decent tunes. that's about when I moved on. I'm glad they're still pumping out albums but I just don't go out of my way to listen to them now.

I wish they would have tried going a different direction with their older music than lean more towards the reggae they do now.
