Classic Texas Country Artists

Who does everyone consider the top Texas country artists of all time?
In no order:
David Allen Coe
Waylon Jennings
George Strait
Willie Nelson
Bob Wills
To pick a top one though, I don't think that is possible. But for me, Coe and Jennings are probably the top. And I know I am forgetting a lot of other good ones.

George Strait is a good one, but compared to Waylon, I think he just gets beaten out. Waylon just had the perfect voice for country. Not heavy on the twang, but could tell exactly where he was from. But, I don't think even Tennessee could match Texas in country. It's pretty damn close, but I'm from Texas therefore it is the best bar-none and no I will not listen to fact.

Yea but Coe always claimed he was 'Texan'. And being from Texas helps. Singing mostly about Texas helps as well, so thats why I included Coe.

Gotcha. I think everyone would agree Jerry Jeff Walker is one of the quintessential Texas singers (although he is from New York).

And Coe liked to dabble a lot in Outlaw Country, which was basically a Texas form of country at heart with the main members being Jennings and Nelson. I'd be willing to bet a lot of people think Coe is from Texas.
Van Zandt is a good one as well. I think the 60's and 70's were quite good for Texas country and George Strait kept it going in the 80's and 90's.

I remember reading a Rolling Stone review for a Robert Earl Keen album back in the early '90s and they asked the question, "Why do all the great Texas songwriters have the tone and pitch of a newborn calf?" I love all these guys mentioned in this thread but that's still funny.

I still think its better then that pop crap out today where singers over-do their accents. We know its country, you don't have to over pronounce words. Thats why I love the classic guys, they actually do sound like outlaws.

It's easier to just say Texas country artist in a headline then classic Texas country and western artists. But you're right, in no way is Bob Wills a country singer.

He also has another song where he says I'm DAC and I'm from Dallas, Texas. He also has another song titled Young Dallas Cowboy and an album titled Texas Moon. He also sang in the style of Willie and the boys, so its reasonable for Texas to 'quasi-claim' him.

IMO when I think of Texas Country, it's almost impossible to beat Jerry Jeff Walker.
