Gameplay Trailer

quote:

In years past, we only had one ball speed, which meant only one type of trajectory for every type of pass. So, for example, if you threw a lob pass on a streak to an outside wide receiver versus a lob on a swing pass to a running back, you would get the same type of trajectory, or what we called a “moon ball.” In NCAA Football 13, we have broken down the trajectories and ball speeds into more than 20 different zones. So now that swing pass to the running back can be completed in stride with enough time to turn upfield. We’ve also slowed down how fast bullet passes fly for shorter, medium and deep distance passes. When the receiver is only 10 yards away, you wouldn’t expect a bullet pass to be as hard as the QB can throw it because that would make for a very difficult catch. Therefore, the bullet pass in this case will be much slower than if you were trying to fire in a deep dig route in between zone defenders down the field.

quote:

The change to pass trajectories also allowed us to make it easier to get the three types of passes: lobs, medium/touch, and bullet passes. To get a lob pass, simply tap the receiver icon. To get a bullet pass, hold the receiver icon all the way through the QB’s pass animation. Finally, to get a medium/touch pass (and this may take a little practice to master) press the receiver icon and then release before the QB gets to the end of his animation. The medium/touch passes will be especially useful when trying to toss a ball just over linebackers’ heads and in front of the safeties.

quote:

Watch out though, because with these new throw on the run animations there is definitely some risk to trying to throw certain types of passes. For example, if you are scrambling out to the left with a right handed QB and attempt to pass all the way back across the field to the right, it’s going to be very difficult to complete.

quote:

Well, have no fear my friends because we have also added a brand new catching system. This new setup allows us to eliminate holes so you won’t see balls flying over receiver’s heads without a catch attempt.

EA Gameplay Blog

New trajectories are going to fix much of the problems with passing. The read and react defensive AI also looked great (Randle and Kirkpatrick play is a very nice example).

Shovel pass is a nice addition. Hopefully the new trajectory system is a fancy way of saying no more linebackers with 60" verticals...or at least it's somewhat easier to throw over them.

And the play action abort/bltiz pickup I could see being really useful.

The receiver awareness is a realistic add, but I could see getting really frustrating with increased incompletes and turnovers...guess that evens out though

Well that didn't take long... We get it, EA sucks, NCAA sucks.

Now that that's out of the way, can the rest of us get back to talking about what this thread is actually about?

They talked about this in the video. They said that the linebackers shouldn't behave this way as much. Due to the fact that you can throw the ball over them with different trajectories and they have to be looking at the ball to swat it. Defenders with their back to the ball will not make a play on it. I did see them make a few throws over the LBs that would have gotten knocked down in 12 though.

They also said you could throw to dim receivers and make user catches with them, but the cpu would not attempt a catch if the icon is dim.

Gotcha. Sounds good.

This will save a few controllers for me haha... Can't freakin stand when a defender covering a different receiver from the one I'm throwing to has this sudden instinct to break off his guy and come intercept a pass going the other way.

i buy it every year for the updated rosters. what's 60 bucks a year when one makes a decent salary? some of you xbox people pay that for live without complaining. and isn't it the same every year?

yeah...THAT won't cause major glitches or anything... I can't wait to "moon ball it" on a 5 yard curl route

I am liking what I am hearing.

Still want to hear more, though.

so you won’t see balls flying over receiver’s heads without a catch attempt.
or balls bouncing off my WR's helmet on a crossing route?

That'll be nice. You don't have to make the catch, but putting your hands up would be good.

I'm real glad they are making improvements to the passing game, but I am wondering why it took them so long? The passing game has been basically identical for the last 10 years.

That will eliminate alot of cheese, right there.

I wonder if they are doing anything to make drag routes coverable by the ai?

They said this was not an issue with the new animations.
