For reference, since 1990, when the NBA moved to a weighted draft lottery, only 3 teams with the worst record have one the lottery, while the second and third worst teams have one 4 times each, the fifth worst team has won 5 times in this span.

SIAP, I just came across this and thought it was interesting.

we've discussed it a few times. it's the primary reason i'm not behind the tank.

ETA: but it's good to remind everyone of why we don't need to lose every game

But we need to keep tanking if we want to stay in that second and third place spot.

4th place has won it more than either of those, though.

Each spot we fall we are able to fall that much further in the lottery. If we have the worst record, the worst pick we can get is 4th, if we have the second worst pick the worst pick we can get is 5th, if we have the third worst record the worst pick we can get is 6th, and so on...

The lottery is only 3 picks. After that, you are "slotted." You are correct in that respect. However, everyone wanted to "tank" for Davis, not a chance at Barnes versus Beal.

Aren't the odds weighted for the teams with the worst record though?

Supposedly... There have always been grumblings that it is rigged (Lebron to Cleveland).

A better example of rigging would be the most infamous: Ewing to the Knicks.

Derrick Rose to the Bulls

The league needed to Bulls to be relevant again.

I'm all for rigging. Who got screwed by a star leaving them this year? Washington has Wall. Charlette has Jordan. We have nothing to sell right now. And I'm sure Stern wants to say he left the Hornets in a better spot than he found them.

Ewing to the NYK
LeBron to Cleveland
Rose to Chicago
Davis to New Orleans

If you sincerely believe that having the worst record means we are LESS likely to win the lottery, then you need to delete your account and lock yourself in a closet.

Where the hell are you getting that from? I haven't seen anyone suggest anything like that.

2nd poster in this thread talking about it being the reason we shouldn't tank.

Besides it wasn't directed to anyone personally, just putting it out there in general.

Although there has been mention of this as a reason NOT to have the worst record, on this board and other boards out there as well.

You are totally misconstruing his point. The point he is making is that the odds really aren't that much better to justify intentionally losing.

We will probably have 167 or 173 combos going into the lottery. Washington will probably have 199 combos which isn't that different.
