On my way from BR to Illinois. Should be around St. Louis at lunch time. Any casual, good places close to I-55? Maybe some good BBQ? TIA

You might be going through too early, but Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston, MO is one of my favs. Just watch out for the ensuing food coma!

At 55 just as you cross into Missouri, there is a section of town called Soulard, take the exit that will get you there. It is there answer to the FQ, but has some good eats. ETA Google best BBQ, and there is a place listed on it, that is in the area described.

There's a chef that posts here who lived there for a while. Maybe he'll show up with info.

Mis-read the direction you are traveling, the Soulard exit is the last exit in Missouri in St. Louis.

17th Street Barbecue in O'Fallon, Illinois.
Mike Mills is the legend of barbecue. He was Memphis in May Champion six times. Rumor is they asked him to stopped coming and let some others share the glory.
Order the Grand Champion Plate. It comes with ribs, turkey, chicken, sausage, brisket, pork shoulder and two sides. Be sure to get the onion straws.
ETA: The Grand Champion Plate will easily feed two people or one starving lumberjack.

You're welcome. I should have added that at this location they serve both baby back and St. Louis style ribs. In addition to the original sauce they also have a red sauce due to the St. Louis area market. I prefer the baby back ribs and original sauce, but it is simply a matter of personal preference.
Be sure to buy a bottle of Magic Dust. It is the best rub you will ever find. Also if you pick up a copy of Peace, Love and Barbecue then you will never need another barbecue cookbook.

I have been here and it is a good stop.

If nothing else, look at the website and make their sticky toffee pudding. Fantabulous.
The BBQ joint that will feed a hungry lumberjack sounds legit as well.

I used to live about three blocks from thier plant, it hosts a farmers market on Wed. that is killer for some unique things to put on a plate. Blue mashed potatoes will make people look at the plate with eyes bugged out. Monarchs is a block or so away, and the chef there is a NOLAn, and got a James Beard award.
