| For those conservatives who refuse to vote for Romney (Posted on 4/6/12 at 9:41 am)
would Paul Ryan as VP change your mind? I think that worries about a Romney nomination splitting the Republican party were mostly hysterical, but I do think you have to be concerned about a small portion of the base staying home. So the question is: for those who think Romney and Obama are "the same" or some variation of this view, does Paul Ryan becoming Romney's dauphin heal the wound of the nomination process? Or does a Ryan VP just make it harder for Romney to win the general?

Ryan won't make the evangelicals vote for Romney. Santorum will probably stay home on election day.

I think conservatives are going to realize that their qualms about Romney are nothing compared to the utter disaster that would be an Obama reelection and they will turn out to vote for him. Of course, Romney could help himself with a solid conservative VP selection.

If Romney was stupid enough to take Ryan out of Congress, I'd either vote for Obama or 3rd party

No. And how can anyone call themselves a conservative and vote for Romney? You're either a moderate or just another slave to the Republican party. Why stand for a party mascot and not conservative principles?

How can anyone call themselves conservative or moderate and allow Obama to win again because you're upset over some antiquated idea of a true "conservative."

Maybe if you're more devoted to what's good for your country than ideological masturbation?

Good point. Apparently a fifth of Americans wouldn't vote for Romney because he's a polytheist? That is to say, a Mormon?

Either way, I'd value Ryan more in his current role especially given GOP control of both Houses, than I would Mitt in the WH.

I like Ryan in the House. And we can argue all day that the selection of Romney is a failing proposition (as would every other candidate most likely) and will lose because he doesn't ignite the base. But the more the right wants to talk about social issues and not focus on the economy, the more likely these losses will continue.

He's not Obama. He will promote legislation from the Republicans in Congress. He will appoint possible SCOTUS replacements. Pretty good fricking reasons.

I know this is cliche, but if you consider the field, I think Romney is the no-brainer choice for victory.

Obama is going to win anyway. I'll sleep great at night on election day knowing I voted for someone who shares my belief system. You'll be voting for what you consider the lesser of two evils. How will you sleep at night knowing you voted for evil? What good would Mitt do anyway? We are going to lose to Obama. What we should be doing now is working to get a conservative candidate ready for 2016. There isn't a conservative running for President this election in the 2 main parties. After 4 more years of Obama, voters will be leaping into the Rep.'s arms if they play the cards right. After 8 years of Bush we were guaranteed a Democrat. After 8 years of Obama the Rep.'s could clean up house with new energy and new voters. The problem is that we aren't going to usher in new voters if we embrace candidates like Frothy, Mittens, Perry, or Bachmann. Time for your party to drop the warmongering, homophobic, sexist, pro-drug war, pandering rhetoric and get back to fiscal conservatism. Maybe then we can offer a clear and concise difference from the Dems. Maybe then we could usher in a a new era of conservatism. Maybe you could get your Reagan, Goldwater, Paul, or Gary Johnson. Maybe we could revitalize a no longer conservative party. Or we could prolong the death spiral by losing by 2 points in the general withy a shitty, liberal candidate and a line of hackish puppets (Rubio, etc.) behind him, waiting for their turn. I'm going to vote 3rd party and hopefully others will too. Maybe if Romney loses by 8 percentage points instead of 2, a message will be sent and the conservatives will wake up. Or we could prolong the process and keep losing with shitheads. The choice is yours. Either way; unlike you, I vote for conservatives. What principles are you voting for? The sky isn't going fall in the next 4 years and Mittens wouldn't change that anyway.

I don't care how you define the word conservative. Any candidate I vote for has to embrace limited government. Embracing it slightly more than the candidate the Democratic party puts out simply isn't enough. The Republican party has tried to feed me shite for over two decades. I'm done swallowing it. If you won't nominate someone that believes in small government, I won't vote for him. Period. Save your pontificating for someone who cares more about the Republican Party claiming a win than they do the future of the United States.

No, I would never vote for Romney in the primary (I voted for Ron Paul). I will most likely vote for Romney in the general election to keep Obama from getting reelected. I may have to vote for Gary Johnson, though.
