GPS/fishfinder powering off ????

I know these are sensitive to power, but I thought I'd ask. When I start my boat, the unit shuts off. I guess voltage gets too low? One potential issue is, the radio is spliced into those power wires. I hope this is only temporary while I figure out why my extra ACC switch has no power. Could this contribute even if the radio is not on?

a friend of mine's boat was doing this...have you changed a battery recently? or disconnected it? make sure all your connections are good and you didn't leave a wire disconnected. probably not the answer but worth a shot

Just tightened everything because the motor was acting like a weak battery. It's supposed to be a new battery. Everything else works fine.

Maybe the panel you have it wired to is turned off when the motor is being cranked, sorta like the radio in your truck cutting off when you are cranking your truck.

Shouldnt be a voltage drop problem. Shouldnt take much juice to run that thing.

I wouldn't think it would be this. The draw from the radio and GPS shouldn't be that much...sounds like the battery is weak.

Pulled the panel. Found the wires that were supposed to go to the empty acc switch. Hooked them up. Got a light. Unhooked radio from GPS lines. Hooked radio to second acc switch. Now each has their own switch and GPS did not power off.

Very good chance this is your problem. You need a clean power supplys for a GPS/sounder.

Last wiring issue is front fishfinder. The only wires up there are troll and trim. I don't think this is going to work.

Between that there isn't a constant power wire and a ground wire? Seems like that's all you need

What combo unit you have? See if there is a reading on the screen that gives voltage. Most units have this and if the power supply drops below 11.5 volts, the unit will drop out. That is why you need a clean power supplys. Now the power supply that comes to the dash feeding it(main power supplys wire), it might need cleanning. A lot of boat builders don't use tin coated connectors. By using crap, one will have trouble in a short time. You can clean the connectors and spray some silicone spray on them which helps protect them. That is a short term fix, but you will have to keep on doing this over time.

Also, on your main power supply wire. What size is it and how long of a run? Also, what are you feeding off it? Do you have a disconnect switch at the battery? One other thing is a bad ground wire can screw up even faster. Do check that.

Not sure about any of that because I really think that issue is over. Moved on to the front fishfinder issue, and I cannot find an explaination of how trim switches are wired. Hate that I'm going to have to pay someone to do this.

One last thing. Battery placement on this boat sucks hard. have to remove the oil container to get to it. All sorts of issues doing that.

Damn, well hope it doesn't have to come to that. Though it seems like the seller wasn't very forthcoming with all the issues. Or did he tell you about these wiring problems etc.?

I cannot say there were any wiring problems. I installed the radio and caused the splice issue. There never was a front fishfinder, and bay boats just have TM and trim anyway. No bow light. He told me the gas gauge did not work which will be on the list when I bring it to the shop.

My boat has some electrical problems too. But I knew it when I bought it. Little things, like gauges, bow lights wouldn't work, etc.

I planned on rewiring when I bought it anyway. Half of boat owners have no clue about wiring but try their hand at it anyway.

Been though this shite before. You can take the unit to west marine etc and have it checked. I finally put ac plug in with built in converter to do this myself, and load my numbers on computer. It is your GD wiring on the bost. U have a short or bad connecttion, bad fuse somewhere. I got so tited of this shite I finally just went to handhelds and brought extra batteries. Start with the connection to your panel check your fuses and then start checking connections. It is real fun. Or just rewire the damn thing

Ours was and still is horrendous. Looks like 3 different clueless people tried to wire stuff. We just figure it out and made it work rather than pull new wire. I have a few things I'm gonna redo when I wire in the spare battery and install the radio.
