A 'real life Ron Swanson' lives in Lafayette (Parks and Rec)

Local woodworker becomes Internet sensation via The Daily Advertiser.

Fans of NBC's hit sitcom "Parks and Recreation" were buzzing about his uncanny resemblance to Ron Swanson, a manly man who is one of the show's main characters. Parker turned to Google.
"Lo and behold, there I am in a split screen with this Ron Swanson charter, and I'm like, 'What the heck is this?'" said Parker, who hadn't ever seen Parks and Recreation or heard of Swanson.
A few days earlier, DJ Digital of Hot 107.9 had posted on the Lafayette radio station's website several pictures he took from Parker's television commercial.
DJ Digital's post informed the world that a real-life Ron Swanson was living in Acadiana and running a woodworking business, which the radio personally noted is "such a Ron Swanson-esque thing to do."
In the interest of full disclosure, I did write this article. It was a fun assignment since I'm also a fan of the show.

but does he play the sax?
haha, good question, but the connection doesn't extend to moonlight as a jazz sax player

your editor missed one

I'm not sure why a three-page article was necessary on a guy that has a slight passing resemblance to Ron Swanson, but good luck to you.

Yeah, but I'll take the blame for that one. I typed it and just missed it somehow.

Thanks. I appreciate it. It was a lighthearted feature article and wasn't intended to be an earth shattering report or anything. I interview him about a week ago, so it definitely wasn't something my editors wanted me pursuing as a top priority. I finished it up in between more hard news stories this past week.

I think this type of feature could make the news anywhere. It's just a profile of someone in the community. Here at The Daily Advertiser, we do a pretty good mix of the more serious stories with in-depth reporting too. One piece doesn't represent an entire volume of work.

Yep, that's a picture of me. It seems to get posted here anytime I share my articles on TD. It is also one of the first google results for my name, haha. College was a lot of fun, and I do really like those tiger statues scattered around campus.

my LSU buddies give me grief about the UL v. ULL thing all the time. Our paper goes with "UL" as a style rule rather than "ULL" since that's what most of the community calls the school. Then again, I just say "LSU" rather than "LSU A&M."
Edit: I accidently hit "submit" instead of preview. Cleaned up some stuff.

sounds like poor journalism to refer to an entity by something other than its legal name
ULL is the name of the school
LSU, while its full name is "LSU A&M," got permission from the state legislature to refer to the school as LSU
ULL never got permission for such a name change

Eh, I disagree with you on this one. Look, I'm an LSU graduate so I totally get the argument, but it's a pretty minor issue.
I'll liken it to the shorting of personal titles. If I interview a business's or group's PR person and their literal title is something long like "regional vice president of communications, community outreach and media affairs," there's a pretty good chance I'll just identify you as "company spokesman."
The UL v. ULL debate is one I also can't win — if I use one "UL" I please the locals and upset the Tigers. If I use "ULL" I please the Tigers and upset the locals.

you work there, you have to do what you must to get ahead
even if it is catering to the ridiculous myth that they are THE university of louisiana

I grew up in Baton Rouge, and I've only lived in Lafayette for a little more than a year.
I pretty much like everything about Lafayette (people are friendly, traffic seems better than BR, lots of great places to eat, good music, plenty of bars, strong arts and culture scene, etc.) but one of my few complaints is the anti-LSU vibe I get from some people here.
I wouldn't say that sentiment is overwhelming or predominant, but it's here, and I don't get it. I can honestly say that as a tried and true LSU fan, I have never thought poorly of ULL or wish it ill will. In fact, I WANT all of Louisiana's schools do find success.
