Rice -- medium or long grain?

I was raised eating long grain rice in rice and gravy dishes, rice dressing, etc... Is this a regional/local "thing" in certain parts? Thinking of upsetting the world order here at home and trying medium grain. Is rice just plain rice? Any big differences in cooking the two, gravy/taste absorption, certain grains for certain dishes, etc... Just curious on the comments...

LGR is best. MGR is OK. SGR is preferred by queers...
