I always thought about a career path with the Wildlife and Fisheries but chose to go into IT due to worries about income. Now that the wife is finishing residency, our income situation will be different and this is something i would like to look into again.

To begin i thought I would simply go to the wlf web page and read up but that wasn't much help.

Does anyone know where i can read up on career paths available in the WLF? (is there a Federal WLF or DNR type office?)

Anyone work for them or know someone who does? Just looking for some insight. Things they like/don't like about the job. All suggestions or insight is welcome.

Have a Bachelor degree in IT from LSU, work experience is all IT based.

I thought about it several times, but my wife is a teacher, so the income is the biggest factor against me doing it.

IMO they just don't get paid enough to be going deep into the woods alone, after outlaws who are armed.

I think they have a couple on here (daylover maybe???).

You can try this. I'm sure there is someone there that would be more than happy to sit down with you and show you what they have to offer.

They don't get paid shite and now with the bill that Jindal introduced I expect to see a mass exodus from WL&F. I'll go into further detail later.

Experience: 8 months working at WL&F.

I had considered this path post highschool, but opted for something inside. This hospital is a constant 70* and it never rains/snows/hails in my vascular lab.

I went through their hiring process once and know, knew several agents. Not real sure what you want to know. I can tell you what I know but dont want to be a 'Debbie downer" cause most of it is negative

Think about every dumbass you've ever seen or encountered while fishing or hunting.

Now think of the fact that those idiots will officially be your problem to deal with. Add in those nasty days that you would normally stay home cuz of the weather. Yeah, you gonna be out there in it with those same idiots.

If that's what you want, go for it. Just make sure you take all the factors into consideratin and make an informed decisison.

Here's the link to the Department of Civil Service. Good luck! I turned down a game warden's job in 1994.

Just finished this book about Louisiana game wardens.

The few guys that I have spoken with either have a background in law enforcement or some type of natural resource management (wildlife, fisheries, forestry, biology, etc.), either an associate's or bachelor's degree. That alone adds to the cost of possibly getting hired.

I also think that they have to have a good amount of law enforcement training, don't know if you get paid for that or not.

Absolutely do not expect to be able to work where you please. If you want the job, they will more than likely ask where you would like to work and take that into "consideration"

Sometimes people get into these types of careers and realize it's fun for a couple years and the the BS starts getting old and you start trying to wrap your head around putting up with it for 25-30 years.

Thanks for the excellent responses. I suppose my boyhood dream of cruising around in a flatboat and big truck are not so cool in real life. lol

I definitely considered game warden route and the first thing i thought of was dealing with idiots who are for the most part armed, and the worse part skilled with that weapon. It appears my worries are a bit too true.

What i was really curious about is if they had alternate paths where I would deal with managing wildlife rather than managing humans who are causing problems in it.

Or if you could be promoted into a more favorable type of officer specializing in something else. Assumed they would have a similar route to the police department and had some type of detectives or investigators of some sort. Only way I would go the enforcement route is if there was some type of light at the end of the tunnel.

----

I will go ahead and email the HRM office, assume they would have someone that could offer me some guidance on career paths available.

(thanks slickback)

----

I suppose I will need to begin investigating plan B and consider getting involved in the Coastal Restoration efforts. I find this fascinating on many levels and also have a personal passion due to living on the water while growing up and watching the erosion occur. I believe they have a building on the LSU campus that specializes in this. But for this one i would need to live in Baton Rouge, and this may or may not happen since we haven't ironed out our exodus from rural Arkansas.

A friend of mine is majoring in coast and environment at LSU. He loves it.

They couldn't pay me enough to want to deal with a few of those idiots out there especially when they are legally able to carry a gun.

Plus, I really wouldn't want to work in the government right now.
