Recently ive been thinking that homebrewing is something that me and my Dad could get into. We both have chemistry degrees and like beer so I was thinkin that this could be something that we could be really good at. Im looking for some tips as to where to go to get a beginners kit and a "how to" book. Just really dont know where to start.

Get a $25 mr beer and see if you like it.

Make sure you use 1 lb of dry malt extract instead of the booster.

and check out homebrewtalk as the prior poster recommended.

If I were a chemist I don't think I would go with Mr Beer. I don't think it teaches much. Maybe the Brooklyn kit to start.

But its 1/4 the price of a decent starter 5 gallon kit so you can see if you will enjoy the hobby before dropping a lot of cash.

And like I said, use a pound of DME with the base mr beer HME and you can make decent beer, better than Budweiser at least.

That being said, after 2 mr beer batches I quickly moved on to a better 5 gallon kit with specialty grains and what not.

This is the kit I started with. I opted for the glass carboy. But now, I almost always use my plastic "Better Bottle" carboys ( I have 4) as they are much lighter and easier to handle. You'll also need a boiling pot. I started out w/ a 7 gallon aluminum pot but that was too small. I now use a 10 gallon aluminum pot I bought at Academy. And then eventually I got into All Grain and bought a 10 gallon igloo to use as a mash tun. But I would start out using malt extract instead of mashing.

Get John Palmer's book or read online Here

I have one of these kits LINK that I can sell you cheap. I won it in a contest, but I don't really need it for anything. I already had a pretty good brewing set up. I'd sell it to you for $40 if you want to pick it up in BR.

From there I think all you'd need is a brew pot and an ingredient kit. If you don't already have a stainless steel pot to use, that is.

One tip i got when i used to brew that was key: it doesn't matter if you brew an award winning beer, if you fail to sanitize properly it will taste like arse. DO NOT use short cuts when cleaning

also, the mr beer instructions suck
you need to ferment for 2 weeks, bottle condition at room temp for 2 weeks and condition in fridge for 2 weeks for your best results

Thanks for all the help. I spent about 5hrs at work lastnight on Homebrewtalk.com and I think what im gonna do is start with the MrBeer kit and do 2-3 brews with that then start upgrading to the 5gal setup.

key with any brewing is not rushing it

2 weeks fermenting
2 weeks bottle conditioning
2 weeks in fridge

i use both

booster is basically just dextrose that will raise your alcohol content 1 percent

with the mr beer extract plus 1 pound dme plus booster most mr beer kits will be 5% or so

people will hate on mr beer but the problem isn't the keg itself, it is the way people use it
