My son is about to turn 9. For his birthday i want to get him a 20 ga. pump. I have the choices narrowed down to Benelli Nova , Browning BPS Micro, Mossberg Bantam, or a Remington 870. Any input would be appreciated. He hunts turkey, deer, dove, ........

I bought my wife a Mossberg Bantam with the 2 barrels.....regular and slug.

Its a nice little gun. Shoots great, inexpensive too.

Don't spend alot on a youth gun like that, he'll be growing out of it sooner than you think.

Did your wife's gun come with interchangeable choke tubes?

He is shooting a Harris and Richards 20 gauge single barrel. Those pumps kick worse than that?

Yes angus.....screw in tube tubes. I paid around 240 bucks for the setup on sale. You can find them all day for that price.

Its a nice little gun and I have hunted with it too. Rifled slug barrel makes it a very accurate shooting gun for sabot slugs. It would be even better if I could see further than 50 yards

Oh and the pumps will kick harder, especially the slug gun. But I think he'd be ok.

870 youth. He'll never outgrow it. It makes a very fine rabbit gun for a grown man.

Agree. Fun gun to skeet shoot with too. Also agree with whoever said don't spend alot of money on it. They will outgrow them quick.

I love the classic look of the 870 but that Benelli Nova is a bad arse looking gun. I just don't know much about it. The Bantam just seems a little more versatile.

I guess you could always buy the Benelli then just change out the stock when needed.

I was thinking of doing this to my wife's gun since she died back in 2010.

There isn't much difference between this and an 870 express. I don't like the tang safety on the bantam.

That's precisely what I prefer.

I never shot anything with a tang safety until this year. Bought a stoger sxs .410 with a tang safety. Been shooting 870's my whole life and I still catch myself trying to push that button

I personally can work an 870 safety much faster than a tang safety. It's also less prone to accidentally being clicked off while plowing through briars and shite like that.

Hows your eye?

My 870 does kick, but its not unbearable. Even when I was young.
