Question long time coming

After that little OT-rules speech at halftime, here's a question that's been bugging me for 2 years:
In the 2009 NFC championship game, the Saints kicked a FG a good bit into OT to beat the Vikings. With the rules in place that season, what would have happened should time have run out?
You could not have declared it a tie due to the meaning/purpose of that game. Would they have squared off the next day? Or would they have begun an extra OT, and if so, what was the point of the game clock?

I may be misunderstanding, but if the Saints kicked the FG, and the Vikings got it back and the time ran out with them having the ball, the Saints would still have won.
Are you asking what would happen if the Saints had kicked the FG as time expired? I think in that case, the Saints still would have won, with no additional time, but I am less sure.

The game only continues after a field goal if that was the first possession of OT.

yes but what if the Saints wasted all 15 minutes of the OT quarter and kicked the field goal.
pretty much impossible, but what if.

Oh haha that would be awesome. Pretty sure game over.

That was what I was basing my post on. I actually forgot how the specific situation in the NFCCG went.

No no. Sorry. I meant what would've happened if the Saints hadn't kicked/made the FG and the OT clock hit zero still in a tie?

But in that OT against the Vikings, they got the ball first and fumbled.

Ohhh. Regular season: tie. Playoffs: second OT and first to score win.

Alright. Thought playoff OT rules were the same back then. So, a game clock in a playoff OT is basically pointless, other than the "advantage" of coin tosses?

Well I guess there is a point. If the first team kicked a field goal on the first possession of OT, the other team gets a possession. If they are driving but can't score before the clock expires, then they would lose. That's the only significance of the clock in playoff OT that I can think of.

...now I feel dumb. I thought OT was absolute sudden death until this year's playoffs

I think it became a rule for last year's playoffs but it wasn't a rule when the Saints played in the NFC Championship game two years ago. And I don't think the rule has ever come into play. Regular season OT is sudden death.

So to answer my question...as far as you know...if they had ended OT tied, another coin toss would've started a second OT?

Definitely another OT. No idea if it would be sudden death or there would be a coin toss.

That' the obvious guess. Just can't remember there being a clear-cut rule back then
