I bought myself a Sako 270 for Christmas and have no idea what type of scope to buy.
I know I need Weavel (sp?) mounts and can sight it in myself.
I live in Thibodaux, but can travel within an hour or so no problem. (Houma or Baton Rouge)
Not looking to spend a fortune, but want the best scope for its value. Probably under $500 if possible. I'll probably upgrade it once I graduate (and get a real job).

Just looking for suggestions.
TIA.

For $500, go with the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40mm. Normally $499, they are on sale right now at Cabela's for $399. Do it.

The last coco is exactly right on the zeiss conquest. Have one on my tikka 22-250. That thing is a sniper rifle.

I have a zeiss 3-9x40mm on my tikka 270 WSM. think I paid around $400 for it. Can't go wrong with Leopold or tikka though.

Leupold VXII /thread.

I've hunted with a few zeiss scopes and find the eye relief is a little more critical on them than the leupolds. Excellent glass on both.

Also, another little annoying thing about zeiss, the turrets are not marked L and R. They are marked R and U I think. Nothing major, just annoying.

If you can afford it, go Zeiss.

Assuming you mean Weaver? And no. You don't want Weaver bases and rings. This is as important as the glass. Look at some TPS rings and rail. They are affordable and vastly superior to Weaver.

The scope thing has been discussed ad nauseam on here. Try a search, but most of what you have found has been said.

Personally I would go Leupold VXIII, but I do have some Zeiss Conquests that are great scopes.

you have a $1000 rifle man. you can't put a $500 scope on it. At least get the 1" tube swarovski. if i remember correctly your looking at $100 for sako mounts if you don't have them already.
Sako mounts are good for up to 50mm lens size. If you want to go with the 30mm i think the mounts might be a little more, but the 30mm tube is way out of your price range. Spend the $700 and get the swarovski.

Oh... Sako mounts are not normal weaver style rings. they have a tapered mount. You have to buy either the sako brand or if leupold makes a mount. Weaver brand mounts are crap buy the way, made out of aluminum. Buy either leupold mounts or the Sako mounts

I'll put my Swarovoski Z3 4x12-50mm with BRH reticle against it. Just messin.. Kinda..

Don't cheap out on glass. Nothing less than a Leopuld, high end Nikon, Zeiss, Swarovoski, Meopta, S&B. That's a wide range of scopes with a wide range of prices. Get the most you can afford. I have never heard anybody say, damn I wish I wouldn't have gotten this Swarovoski, it's too clear. I have heard, damn I wish I woulda forked over 200-300 more dollars 2-3 years ago for that nicer scope.
