Anyone else think he is one of the most under-appreciated/under-rated actors out there?

He has done some great work.

And it looks like he is going to be snubbed by the Academy again. His performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is amazing from what I am hearing. There was talk early on of him almost being assured a nomination. However, he isn't appearing on any end of the year lists, failed to garner a SAG nomination, and also was completely snubbed by the Golden Globes.

yes and no. sure, he doesn't win awards which he probably deserves, but he's damn near always mentioned in underrated discussions to where it puts him in an awkward middle ground of appreciated-at-large but with no major acknowledgement to hang his hat on.

I don't think he's under-appreciated at all. I think most people would rate him at least top 10 living actors. Just cuz u don't have an Oscar doesn't mean your not one of the best.

I guess I just don't see the praises out there like you have.

Well, a lot of my friends do have some questionable taste in movies.

I think he's versatile and one of the better supporting actors out there, particularly in antagonistic roles.

he's pretty chameleonic, so it's easy for people to miss him. I've seen him in movies where I didn't realize it was him until halfway through or even until after it was over. his strength isn't distinction, it's malleability.
