Mike Stoops to A&M as DC with Sumlin

Could be the case per Bruce Feldman's twitter, Stoops and Sumlin are friends from their OU days:

Sumlin's hire by A&M only ups Mike Stoops' price tag. They're tight & Stoops is the hottest commodity in college coaching now as a DC.

Could be a solid combo for atm

I just went from 6 to midnight

they could do a whole lot worse. i think mike stoops was massively over rated as HC at zona, but OU has never gotten to the levels it had on defense as when mike stoops was DC.
i think that combo would have to be considered a home run hire.

Thats not bad. I've always thought of Stoops as a pretty good defensive mind and Sumlin is known for his offenses. Pretty good combo, IMO

Im pretty excited waiting to see what kind of staff Sumlin puts together when money isn't an issue

Reminds me of Weis + Muschamp, just reverse O and D
Just does, failed HC on one side of ball, up and coming new young HC on the other side of ball, pair their talents and what do u get???......
6-6

Except, with Weis and Florida he wasnt even close to working with personel fit for his pro set scheme. He was working with skat backs and small arse receivers.

That is a good point.
I don't know Weis' college background before Notre Dame but Stoops has a very good track record as a DC. Some people are just better coordinators. I think Stoops is that guy.
But, you successfully rained on my parade and have me nervous as shite now

I think you have nothing to worry about, look at Oklahoma's defense since Mike Stoops left, stats might be say something different, but they had a swagger when he was there. If you guys get him, I think thats a great hire.
And I cant believe I am taking up for A&M

I would think that's a great start to a staff.

Mike Stoops isn't a great HC but he could be a great D-coordinator for A&M. This is a home run hire by A&M if true

6-6 for A&M next year would be a great first year in the SEC, all things considered. Depending on their OOC schedule, I could easily see them going 2-6 next year in SEC play.

jmo, but that's not a very good comaprision. WM wasn't a HC prior to UF, Sumlin has been a HC for 2 or so years. WM probably should have taken a houston type job first imo.

also sumlin and stoops know each other from OU i'd bet

And Bo Pelini shows his cheap arse ways once again. First it was with Tim Beck, promoting an unproven guy to OC when it was clear that Nebraska needed a huge upgrade over Shawn Watson.
And now it looks like he's going to promote John Papuchis to DC, a guy who's never held the position. JP is a great coach, and he's going to be a hot name in the future, but Pelini needed to make a splash hire and leave JP at d-line/special teams/recruiting coordinator.
He needed to hire Stoops, especially with Meyer now in the B1G. But he failed. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.
Nebraska easily has the cash to hire a guy like Stoops, too. So this is mind boggling and quite disappointing.

It's ok, Newt. You're consistent with your upbringing. Your parents should be proud of the outcome.

Paperstreet,
If I were Stoops I'd want an offensive minded HC so that I could be left alone to run my D.
