Appetizers

Fried alligator with chili garlic aioli
This was very very good. The alligator had a very light batter and the aioli sauce was perfect.

Wood-fired oyster roast
This was one of the best things I've ever eaten. The oysters were served on the half shell and had been roasted with a very flavorful sauce. The sauce had a thicker, spicier and much greater depth of flavor than a typical "char-grilled oysters". The closest thing I can compare it to would be almost like a crawfish ettoufee type of consistency and flavoring.

Soup

Black eyed pea and cochon gumbo
I've had better gumbos before but this was still good. The gumbo had a very dark roux and was not greasy at all.

Entree
Boucherie Plate
I had the boucherie appetizer plate as my entree and it came with hogs head cheese, pate with pepper jelly (I apologize but I don't remember what kind of pate), lonza salami (Italian version of dry cured pork loin, seasoned with fennel & black pepper), and Genoa salami. I probably would have been happier with an actual entree but it was lunch and I thought it would have been too much food.

Smoked beef brisket with horseradish potato salad
The person I was dining with had this and was very happy with the choice.

Overall
I love cured and smoked meats and have heard Cochon being hyped a lot; so I went in thinking it wouldn't live up to the reputation. I don't know if I'd call it one of the best restaurants in the city but it is still very good. I think it definitely has a unique niche and there is nothing to really compare it to in town. Everything we had was above average, the hot appetizers being my favorite, and I would definitely recommend it and will be returning.

Edited for spelling.

I have eaten quite a few and I find Domenica's does it best.

Nice Review. Thanks.

Most of his pate is rabbit liver.

I really like the savory bread pudding with soft boiled egg and choupique caviar appetizer.

I met Donald Link at Cochon: Lafayette the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Agree with the Oyster Roast, they give you a ton of them. A nice, hot, medium consistency sauce, garlic and chili butter.

Charred Onion hushpuppies & pickled, chili mayo- Great hushpuppies, obviously, very bready and mayo was right on.

Braised pork cheeks, with spoon bread, soybeans and crushed herbs- May be my favorite dish in the entire place, everything works perfectly. Succulent meat and if you've never had spoon bread, this is the place to try it.

Buddies had rabbit & dumplings and the grilled smoked new york strip with spicy fried potatoes and smothered greens- had Lafayette written all over it. Very rich and filling.

I got the Oyster BLT with mac and cheese. I'd suggest it, after many rich appetizers, it was good to get a sandwich like that.

Place is incredible. Love the meats in Butcher. I follow them on Facebook and their daily specials alone are inspiration worthy.
