There are several options to make sure you look at including the coverdell (sp) savings account along with other things.
My personal view has always been that I can borrow money if I need to, to sent my kids to school. I can't borrow money to fund my retirement. So I just put the extra money into our retirement plan (investment properties).

These are the 529 plans offered through Vanguard. Accounts are very easy to set up and fund, and the site is great for reading about 529s in general.

If you live in LA, the state will match a portion of your contributions into the "START saving" account. If you live in Belize, you're fricked.

I went with LA's START cause they match a little bit. At the time I started mine for my kids most of what I read suggested that if you live in a state that offers any sort of matching funds, go with that one.

I am actually a product of the start program for LA. I think it ranks first in the union for programs of its kind.
