This is pretty interesting, especially considering the entire system endowment is approximately $1.5 billion.

What percentage of these people coming forward will be lying for money?

given that many of these horrific acts occurred almost 10 years ago, I wonder if the statute of limitations in PA will be any kind of hurdle for the victims? The list of PSU reps who could be made defendants would take up several pages of the petition/complaint.

Maybe for a few of the early ones. It's a little complicated if you turned 18 before 2002, but:

quote:

For cases involving child victims who turn18 on or after August 27, 2002, the Commonwealth now has until the victim’s 50th birthday to file criminal charges for abuse that occurred before the victim turned 18.

Penn State is a state agency, no way in hell they are getting a quarter of a billion from a state that is probably broke and running a deficit.

Yep

I've heard of a lot of cases of PennDOT workers injuring people through blatant negligence like unsecured loaDs, and they were SOL because of limits on suing the state.

Now, if the athletic department is in any way a private entity that could help the victims.

Exactly. They will get plenty of money, but no judge is going to allow 20 people to bankrupt the state university of Pennsylvania.

I suspect that Penn State will eventually create a victims' compensation fund and negotiate generous settlements with the victims. It would be the right thing to do.

The university has endowments to cover this type of liability. Someone else covered this the day before yesterday. I would think if there are no endowments, then they must carry some type of insurance to cover the university against law suits.
