Hey, thanks in advance for the help.

So I am starting to get back into hunting after a few years and I am looking to buy a rifle. I get a little overwhelmed by all the choices and need some recommendations/direction.

I will mostly be hunting whitetail here in the south LA/Mississippi/Texas area, but my parents live in Alaska and have been telling me I need to go out hunting for larger game, caribou or moose, up there. What would be a good caliber rifle to handle the larger game, but not be too much overkill for around here?

Again thanks for the help!

.300 win mag. if you are getting one gun. If you hunt primarily down there and want to use it for moose or goat up here. I primarily use a .338 mag here.

Honestly... I think this would be best served by two rifles. How often are you going to go to Alaska? Couldn't you borrow a big bore magnum rifle up there?

A .30-06 is a good compromise if you want 1 gun though. I'd be extra picky about my shots on a moose or a bull elk though.

Depending on the distances you plan on shooting, I'd probably have a rifle for here and there.

I've got a semi-auto aught six I've had for a couple of years that I love. I still go a couple of times a year with the lever action 30-30 my great uncle gave my dad, but 100 yards would be a long shot for the setup I have here.

.270 Weatherby? Maybe something bigger for up there. Hard to have the best of both worlds I guess, but I'm sure there are plenty that would do fine...

Thanks to the both of yall for the input. A friend of mine mentioned that the .300 win mag was probably the best double duty gun, so I guess I'll start looking at those. Any recommendations on specific models?

I am unsure as to how sure how often I'll use it in Alaska, but I don't want to have to borrow an unknown gun when I do go.

I only have a year and a half left of school here in NO and will hopefully end up in the Northwest after that so I would really want make sure it can handle the bigger game, but the 2 gun option is too much for right now.

Thanks again.

What part of Alaska? It does matter a bit. .300 win mag is fairly all purpose and will suit you well for moose, caribou and other deer.

.300 mag would be good gun. 30-06 would be good up to elk. Not sure about moose. Don't be afraid to get more than one. Guns are to men what shoes are to women.

I have been lucky enough to be invited to go up to the North Slope, I believe in Anaktuvuk Pass to hunt. When I go, it will probably be in that area mostly, but if I start going more, I will branch out and check out other regions.

Thanks all for your input.

Do this:

Buy a rifle you want. Use it until you graduate. Sell it. Buy a 300 when you get up there.

Lots of caribou... Interestingly, the pass is drained by the John River. Anaktuvuk means "where the caribou shite." Always thought that was a strange coincidence.

Llook at the .300 win mag depending on how much you want to spend, a savage is making a really good gun right now, great trigger and very accurate. You can't go wrong with the Rem 700, not the one at Walmart, the real Rem 700. Browning and Tikka are also some very good guns that you can't go wrong with.

Another caliber to consider is the Weatherby .300 wthby mag. You can spend $1000+ on their gun or they have the Vanguard that is $400 or so. Biggest issue with the Weatherby though is the price of the ammo. You will be looking at $80 or so on a box of 20.

Buy you a TC encore so you can have several different calibers with just one gun if you are trying to save a little money...

Flair, I like the idea.

Roger, .338 handles business up there for all the larger game?

.270 for whitetail down here would be plenty gun is assume.

Just me... but if I were going to move up there and hunt Alaska all the time... I'd probably go larger than a .300 when I got there.

Its a good compromise for both places I think.

You know... he could always just buy a dang Mosin Nagant or a surplus 8mm mauser on the cheap, until he gets out of school, and then it could be a truck gun even up in Alaska.

(I'm a bit of a tight wad.)

The family that invited me tells me stories about the caribou herds that pass their camp up there and that has gotten me really motivated to finally get up there.

I like it, it's the norm for lots of people here and it's not called "the Alaskan" for nothing. It is sufficient for most bear, goat (.300 is fine for goat too) moose, caribou, deer. It's certainly overkill for our small deer but it's certainly not for bear, which are routine.

I shoot a .243 for whitetail. No problems. Paw in law gave it to me. Never saw a need to go bigger in south La. But will probably upgrade to -06 or 308 so my son can use the .243.
