Henderson On A Plus-One Scenario

John Henderson in this morning's Denver Post on the upcoming LSU-Alabama game and its impact on the BCS national championship game:
Plus-1
quote:
The smart money is the winner of the Nov. 5 LSU-Alabama game playing Oklahoma, if it wins at Oklahoma State on Dec. 3, for the national title.
quote:
Also, a one-loss LSU or Alabama could be the second-best team in the land.
quote:
Using the current bowl system, and if the season played out as I think it might, the Sugar Bowl (site of this season's BCS championship) would host No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Wisconsin. The Rose Bowl hosts No. 2 Oklahoma vs. No. 3 LSU. The winners play one week later to a payday that would buy a lot of tennis balls for Colorado and Iowa State.
Plus-1

4 16 team BCS conferences
4 16 team Non AQ conferences
8 playoff teams from BCS (4 Conf Champs, 4 rConf unners up)
4 from Non AQ (Conf Champs
The 4 conference runners up play the 4 non Aqs. Winners go into an 8 team playoff with the Conference champs.
:playoff:
1 vs 8/9
2 vs 7/10
3 vs 6/11
4 vs 5/12

My only opinion about the current system and conference match up in the BCS NC is that f you view the whole season similar to a playoff the conference play should eliminate the #2 conference team from championship consideration.
I would rather not have the rematch in the BCS NC and give the loser a second chance.

Here in Colorado, it's been a long time since we've seen good football played here--college or pro!

The whole in-conference thing is just overblown and improperly applied.
If you are comparing LSU to Georgia who play in the SAME CONFERENCE then it is valid.
If you are trying to say Tulsa is better than Oklahoma if Tulsa wins its conference and Oklahoma doesn't, the conference finish is not valid.
The goal of the BCS Championship is to match the "two best teams". It doesn't matter if they've played once or twice during the regular season - give us who the BCS formula says are the two best teams.
Plus one "sounds" good, till you realize that 4 might not be clear, so now 5 complains. So then someone says make it 8, and next thing you know.....
College football had "problem" in old system that bowl matchups were made months in advance and 1 vs 2 rarely matched up. It was purely a beauty contest. No matter how big the playoff, you're going to have some human element involved. Current system has worked good and preserved the value of the game.

I am just saying you bust your arse to prove you are the best in you conference all season tournament style just to let the BCS give someone in your conference a second chance.

If a close game between the best two teams in the nation is played, and both teams are in the same conference. However 1 team gets a homefield advantage how is that fair? Vegas will tell you homefield is worth 3 points.

I understand, but the goal is to "match the two best teams in the country"
When u start looking at "shoulds" and "fairness" then you are not accomplishing that goal.

But then how could we watch Boise St play the Big East champ in the BCS???!!??? Obviously nobody would want Alabama-Wisconsin and LSU-Oklahoma if it meant losing marquee games like say Boise-WVU.

so it adds 3 xtra games to the schedule for some. counting the conference champ. game they will now play up 16 games.

1. I expect us to beat Bama.
2. I think the game should mean something if the home team does win.

I agree with you on both fronts. I think under the current system it will never happen, however with a plus 1 I don't see the issue, because they will both play occ opponents.
I do think that if Ohio state would have stomped Florida in06 and mich won, then LSU Bama rematch would be possible, and they would be saying the best teams can be from the same conference. And there would be talk about a rematch.

It just seems too damn simple for those knuckleheads to adopt this.

You don't think there is any bias at all in saying that the loser of LSU/Alabama is absolutely better than Wisconsin?
