IT Board? Please?

There seem to always be a few IT-related questions floating about the various boards. Sadly, they sometimes get quickly drowned out due to various other topics. Can we get an IT board so those threads can be consolodated there?

Since nothing is for free, I'll pay with boobs.

Perhaps a rename of the Help board to a Help/IT board would work?

Also, it moved.

At this point I think they are just screwing with us. Movie/TV and no Music? Soccer when there's already More Sports?

It is, but a lot of problems are difficult to explain to a search engine. Chicken himself asked an IT question the other day.

it's clear the soccer board was needed because those left on the MSB clearly give 0 fricks about soccer.

but an IT board would be sweet. for the few of us geeks out there.

I don't know, I see a lot of low post counts pop up in all the tech topics on the OT. A lot of techies are introverts.. maybe they would post more with their own board?

Hell, just all the Apple topics on the OT is justification for a Tech board IMO. Add to that the phone threads, the which-laptop-to-buy threads, and the dead computer threads and it should be a busy board. That's not even counting the discussions a dedicated tech board would spawn from the lurkers looking for a place to be a geek without worrying about some jackass OTer popping in to call the poster a geek and express their indifference to the topic.

Home and Health Board first!

Question: is the help board also an IT board? I see many threads made here that ask IT questions.

Most of the geekier geeks hang around the gaming board FWIW. That's why the OT questions can go unanswered.

Heard a joke at a conference a couple weeks ago. What's the difference between and introverted IT geek and an extroverted IT geek?

An extroverted geek will look at your shoes while he is talking to you.

BUMPED. Not because I'm pushing this issue, but have a server/policy issue to ask my fellow IT nerds in this thread. schwartz, kork, hulk, etc, etc...

maybe this is a dumb question and all of you know this already, but i found something interesting and wanted your thoughts before i take this to management.

i've figured out that when working on a server doing admin work. instead of mapping a drive to my roaming profile to pull over a document, script, exe, whatever, I can simply right click it on my desktop and the paste it in the server window onto the desktop.

so i tested it further. seeing if it was specific to a server load, a domain, a ou, and it's not. not only that i can login with a non-admin ID via Citrix and do it to.

so i'm thinking obviously a policy issue, not specific to load, domain, ou, or ID. But I would imagine this is tied to clipboard, so if you take away that in policy you take away the basic function of an admin to copy and paste txt from desktop to server. that's no good.

i myself can't find think of why this would pose any security issues, because the desktop, documents, settings, etc is still tied to a users profile and wouldn't effect other users anyhow.

thoughts?

anyone know a way to turn this off without taking away basic copy and paste of txt via clipboard?

I'm a little confused by this. Are you remoted in to the computer with the remote profile and can just copy/paste a file from the remote computer to the server desktop? If that's the case, that's a setting on the actual remote software. You can turn off the shared clipboard feature.

But I'm probably misunderstanding that, that seems too simple.

any user, admin or not, can rdp to a server and copy a file from their desktop to the server.

that includes admins and clients.

i know where the policy is, but is it worth sacrificing clipboard 'copy & paste' txt to lock this up?

or is there a way to lock down copying files but keep 'copy & paste' txt

Oh I gotcha. Damn, that's not cool

No idea. I imagine people are C&P a lot of stuff to and from the server though, right? Probably have their own network drives? That's tough. While I have basic knowledge of these things, I have no experience, so hopefully Kork, Shwartz, etc. can come in and help you.

In theory, should you be able to, through group policy, allow only certain groups to rdp to the server right? Unless you need everyone to, which upon re-reading seems like is what you might be saying you need.
