I am surprised not to have seen this discussed when I just searched the first 2 pages of Saints Talk.

I think Drew made a big blunder in calling a timeout when we had a 3rd down at the TB 7 yard line with over 4 minutes to go and 3 timeouts in hand. The football 101 call is to run a pass play in the endzone that nets you a TD or incompletion. Obviously with a TD we go ahead and with an incompletion we kick the FG and cut it to 3 with 3 timeouts and over 4 minutes on the clock.

I thought it showed a lack of respect for our defense and/or kicker and may have cost us the game. Thoughts?

we needed a touchdown on that drive. better to get the right personnel on the field than to rush a play. didn't make a difference either way

The reason you haven't seen it discussed is because it's a stupid as frick.

What are you even talking about? Drew called a timeout because he didn't like what he saw on the field and wanted some time to talk it over.

Says who? Cutting it to 3 points with 3 timeouts plus the 2 minute warning with over 4 minutes to go with a defense that had played really well in the 2nd half was the right call IMO.

I agree he may not have liked what he saw but he could have called an audible. Or even after the timeout he could have thrown it away on 3rd down to stop the clock and kick a FG.

Look, I love Brees to death but I just felt that in that situation he made a very basic blunder in the 2 play stretch.

Calling an audible doesn't solve a personnel mismatch.

Huh, that wasn't the only part of the argument.

That's the most important part. If Brees doesn't see what he likes, you want him to run the play anyways because, hell, we've got three timeouts and he has faith in his defense and kicker? GTFO.

While that may have been the most important part, he compounded the mistake by not throwing it away instead of running.

On 3rd down he tucked it and ran instead of throwing it out of bounds and stopping the clock. So not only did we call a timeout, he kept the clock running.

Cause it would have been better to have a fourth and long instead of picking up some yards and even a possible first down?

no it was a terrible play call on 4th down. tampa and everybody in that damn stadium knew we would PA roll out to the right. shoulda spread the field and ran hitches against zone and used sproles in case they were in man on him in a drag route.

You're being Captain Hindsight except you don't really have a good alternative plan. That makes you a pretty big dumb arse.

2nd time in 2 weeks we've wasted precious second half timeouts in close games.

This right here. I don't agree with that roll out to the right on that 4th down play. Brees is so much better in the spread and dropping back, gives him many more options. Rolling out to the right IMO limits you to your plays. More so the closer you get to the sideline, then your options are very limited at that point and you have to force the ball, which he did. The time out and that play are the really only problem I have. We have lost 2 games and we were in both of them with chances to win them.
