So my wife works fo a local non-profit and they tell her they are having their funding cut by 48% next month. Gotta love the government. Nothing quite like having your pay cut in half.

Here's a novel idea: Get the non-profit's administration to get off of their asses and find other funding.

You're not going to get much sympathy from this board. Is this your first time posting on Money Talk?

Many nonprofits get most of their money from government grants.

Yeah obviously, but you can't really put that on the govt, national or local. I mean that's part of the deal.

So you think cutting government spending is a bad thing?

Of course. ilovebama's post indicated he didn't realize why government spending would have anything to do with nonprofits, I was just explaining.

Damn, that sucks for you guys. What kind of non-profit work does she do?

That may be easier said than done. First, it may not be all that marketable of a charity if their budget got cut by 48%. Second, most non profits aren't very well run. There's a reason they have to rely on the kindness of strangers, or in this case the forced generosity of strangers.

I see no problem with that. Free market.

So how much were you complaining about the government when the checks were still coming in?

So you and your wife understood all along that her salary, income contributions, & even her continued employment was completely based on the funding stream the Non-Profit received from the government, and could end at any point with a new fiscal year or economic situation in DC?
Oh, you didn't?
Well, then...Unfortunately, you should have.

This may be the most unanimous thread fail in the MT history.

If this non-profit is truly a spot of need and many others believe in it also, it will survive and gain more funding.
It's hard not to bring the Poli board in to this discussion, but blaming the govt for her reduction in salary is silly.

Troof!
I'm not really for across the board cuts, but sometimes it is best to cut all and then reinstate the "really necessary" back into properly funded levels. Of course it takes leadership to actually make informed decisions based on need and not political pull where to reinstate funding. We do not have that in Washington.
