My savage .17 hmr experience

I have the 93r17, and bought a sweet 17 scope for it. Went home and mounted the rings. When I went to line the scope up I notice a speck in the lens. I bring the scope back to get another, but the only other one the have is a display model and the turret is messed up. I then decided to Just buy a $150 Simmons so I can get some lead down range. Get home to mount everything down and notice the rings are not high enough for the new scope and hits the barrel. Go back again and get some new rings, mount everything again and start shooting. Shot 50 rounds and couldnt even get close on paper. No group is even close to being consistent. I thought something must not be tight. Take everything back off down to mounts on the barrel, everything seemed tight, put everything back together with loc tite and went to shoot again. I sight in dead on at 25 yards and shoot penny size groups. I move to 50 yrds and I am now shooting 6 inches hight

Its not surprising that you're high at 50 but I didn't know it would be that much. You will probably be high at 100 and 150 yes as well.

Forgot to add that you will love that gun.

Typing on phone... It shots 6 inches high at 50, I dial in at 50 and shoot 4 incessant low at 25. I clean gun and does same thing. This is a 4x12x40, I take it off and mount a 4x scope and dial In at 25 yards. Shot penny size groups at 25 and 50, and about quarter size at 100. I think it's safe to say scope is off but wanted an opinion. Hard to say that I got 3 bad scopes. And advice on good scope for this gun?

I just have a cheap 4-12x40 from Bass Pro on mine.

I can see being high at 50 and 100 if on at 25, but 6 inches at 50, and if on at 50 4 inches low at 25. With 4x I shoot way more consistent, dead in at 25, about 3/4 inch high at 50 and 1/2-3/4 at 100. Just alot of bad luck with everything and wanted second opinion if scope was off. Windage is fine, but elevation Is off of Simmons scope, 4x is dead nuts.

I buy nothing less than a Nikon for any rifle I own. On my deer rifles I have Leupolds VX IIIs

I just figured with the low recoil a 150$ Simmons would be fine, i just wanted to make sure it was scope before I drop 250-300 on another.

I used to go the cheap route but had lots of problems out of cheap scopes.

I have a few nikons and a Burris, and on my rifle when I was younger I have pretty much the same Simmons as on my 17 and have had no problems. Just a little discouraging, thanks for the inputs, going grab a nikon tomorrow.

BBB,
Ya, you're right in that the trajectory is all off for your 17HMR at 50 yards. Here's a good trajectory chart for the 17 HMR.
LINK
For $150 and less, there are a bunch of decent scopes out there for rimfires. I usually do just fine putting a mid price scope on my rimfires. I'll seriously looking at buying a Mueller scope for my 17 M2. I've never had a Mueller, but it gets very favorable reviews on the Rimfire Central site. Of course, it's made in China, but very few optics these days are not made in Far East or Indochina.

Sorry to hear about the scope problems. That being said, the .17hmr is a hell of a round. It will take down anything that we are able to hunt here in the south. Take my word on that.

I have three Muellers, looking to buy another for my 10/22 M2 conversion.

I appreciate all the input, put on a nikon 4x12x40, penny size group dead on at 100yards, 1/4 inch high at 50, 1/4 low at 25. Putting bullets in bullet holes at 25 and 50.

I have the same except it was the package deal with a scope included, can shoot a nickel at 150 yards, with all your scope debacles prob should have got that one.

In retrospect yes, but it's the NRA edition I bought at a banquet.
