I keep seeing that OU would never accept an invitation to play in the SEC because they want an easier path the MNC. But why is this a bad thing and why does aTm not want the easy path to the MNC?

Why is aTm willing to make the change, but they feel others wouldn't want a similar path?

Would aTm feel the same way if UT never got that big TV contract?

I actually admire aTm because is appears that most fans are willing to step it up and welcome the new challenge the SEC will bring them. I think LSU is stronger today because we've had Florida as our perminent East Conference opponent. It's kind of like we had to step it up to compete, or continue to suck. And after the 90's I'm glad we decided to step it up.

What say you?

OU wants to maintain its rivalry and annual game with Texas so it can keep its toehold in Texas recruiting. If that gets cut off they are in serious trouble.

A&M, meanwhile, has (finally) figured out that, so long as it stays in the shadow of Texas, it will never be more than the second-best program in the state (plus having to deal with OU doesn't help matters). It has to find a way to differentiate itself from Texas to potential recruits, so its solution is to offer them the chance to play in the best football conference, the SEC.

Will it work out for them? That's hard to say. But the current scheme isn't working, and remember the classic definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, hoping for different results each time.

You summed it up just about perfectly.

Because unless they join the Big East they won't have one.

Probably. We've beaten several much better teams than y'all have just in the last few years.

LSU's 2007 National Championship lost to a Kentucky team...Careful Big Kat, if yall join no game in the SEC is a push over....Well maybe Vandy.

A&M would be about the 7th best team in the SEC this year. And that's with a terrible East. That's assuming Tennessee is still working out some kinks, UF is a big question mark, and UGA could go either way. Three programs that are usually head and shoulders above A&M. Good luck aggies, that's all I have to say.

Maybe aTm can catch Vandy the first game or two of the year before injuries take the 'dores down a notch. That was the case for Bama for years, we would always open the SEC season with them b4 we went to divisional play. Made for alot of close games in Nashville.

Nope not gonna happen. Who is A&M definitely better than this year in the SEC? I'll give you UK, Ole Miss, Auburn (arguable) and Vandy. Tell me who else.

edit: Don't forget, that any of those four listed could knock off A&M at any time.

This year I'd say those plus Florida, Miss. State, Tennessee, and Georgia.

I'd say on par with Arkansas and South Carolina, with Alabama and LSU a clear step ahead.

Would you say this is likely to be one of the best teams/seasons for aTm since their last championship season?

Easy question. There is more to college affiliation than "easiest path to the MNC"...

I can think of a couple more reasons just related to Football:

1. More exciting Games at Kyle Field
2. Better Road Trips/ Tailgating for our fans
3. Competent Conference Commissioner/ Stability
4. Better Brand Exposure
5. Unique Recruiting Pitch

Plus, maybe in 5-10 years the Big 12 will not have an auto BCS bid if it keeps getting watered down. Maybe in 5-10 years there won't be a BCS as we know it and there will be a 4 super conference playoff system...

It's hard to say for UF, UGA, or UT, but A&M is not definitely better than State this year. They likely won't end up being better than at least one out of the other three teams.

I would tend to agree with you but I am curious if you are saying best since 1998 (Big 12 Champion) or since 1939 (National Champion)? Either way your best team in 13 years or 72 years would still be slotted at best, one step above 6th place in the SEC. Gives you a little clearer view of the size of that bite the Aggies are trying to chew.

Most definitely, I think the team is better. Our '98 squad had a better than average offense with a great defense. But this year our offense is phenomenal, I'd say the most balanced in the Big12. I'd say okie state is the most explosive(lost kendall hunter and olgerson though). OU has great balance too, however they don't have the skill we have at running back after losing murray. I'd argue Tannehill is as good as Landry too. We lost one starter on offense, but we have depth for once.
On defense I think we don't necessarily have the talent we did in '98. But our talent pool is really good and all have 2-3 years of experience. We lost 2 starters, but being our second year in the system we should play much faster and have implemented more packages. I'd put our team up against any other and say we have a good chance to win.

The Arky game will show all what we need to know.

I'm quite certain we're better than those 4 teams.

But the good news is that you would have a running start in the top half. If you can step up the pace just a little maybe it will not take 19 years just to get to the championship game.
