Just escaped from the old folk's home and found this laptop.

Does anyone out there remember a small, family owned grocery store in the 1900 block of Perkins Rd where Marcello's and Mary Lee are currently? It was owned by an Italian family, operated in the mid-1970s, and it had great food. What was the name and/or who were the owners?

No. Merely an allusion to the fact that if I am old enough to be making inquiry regarding a grocery from 40 years ago, I should be in a nursing facility.

I came to LSU in '70 and lived in South Downs after graduating. Worked at the LNB branch in 72-73 but i do not remember that store. Of course i'm as old as you, so who knows...

I don't recall it either although I'm not that old. But I was drinking at Southdowns in 1978.

I remember the Lobianco's Grocery on Government Street and when the Calandro's on Govt rebuilt to what it is today as well as of course Joe D's on Lobdell.

I remember Marabella's Phillip's 66 on Perkins where that buritto joint is.

Did you ever go to Ginos when it was where Zee Zee Gardens is now?

To the OP, I don't know either, and knew that area from that era, and know about all the old Italian grocery families in BR, coming from one myself.

No but I vaguely remember it there. I grew up in old Goodwood and for Italian we went to The Village and Little Italy at Florida and Alello which was a lot like Pinettas which only on occasion did we go there. I really went to Pinettas more when I went to LSU.

I miss Little Italy.

I remember College Town Grocery and Ragusa's Superette on Terrace which was a good family friend.

I've thrown dice on the side of Johnny's Liquor Store.

Little Italy was a very good restaurant, I remember goin there in the 70s. They had great Italian baked oysters, never have ever found any like them. Martini I grew up in Old Goodwood too. We also frequented Giamancos a lot.

I thought Gino's was located where the Thai restaurant is now, next to Overpass Cleaners.

Another old classic. Fried seafood, steaks and Italian with a great oyster bar and all the food was good even up to the day they closed.

Remember they had the dessert display case.

As I recall, the family had a farm in either the Felicianas or southern Mississippi and a lot of their produce came from there. They fixed very good lunches and sandwiches. It seemed like a well established business and I thought it had been there some time. However, I only frequented the place in 1974 and 1975 and never knew what happened to it once I moved out of Southdowns. It closed around 1977.

This is the first thing I thought of.

Did you see the TV this morning of Chalet Brandt bitching about the old building.

I used to go buy beer at Lobiancos years ago.
