SI Klinsmann Interview by Wahl
Klinsmann is really the opposite of Bradley in terms of explaining his roster decisions. Great for fans but wonder how some players will react?
I'm skeptical that he can do much more with the current talent pool than Bradley but the end of the interview illustrates what Klinsmann can do: continue to lay out youth development needs.
Also, on Dempsey: "He also has to kind of clear up things with Fulham in terms of is there a possible move out there?"
????????

Most notable thing I read there is how he talked about the Germany/Lowe situation.
quote:
When I stepped down after [World Cup] 2006 they sold it in a way, Germany, of 'Oh yeah, it's Jogi doing all of that...'

Well the way things have happened since 2006, were they wrong?

According to Klinsmann, yes.
I don't see how you can conclude anything about what would have happened with Germany since 2006 if Jurgen had stayed on.

Even though I think Low is a very good manager I kind of agree with this.
Isn't Klinsmann more responsible for the vast amount of money poured int youth development which is really the reason why Germany has such a strong national side right now?
And Low still hasn't actually brought home any more silverware than Klinsmann did.

This is a really good interview. Jurgy is much more candid than Bob.

I wish he could have explained the Orozco-Fiscal and Rogers selections.
My guess is that he just hasn't seen them play enough to tell that they aren't very good yet.

He said that he listened to MLS coaches with a lot of his choices. I'm guessing that is why we have Robbie here. He probably brought in Orozco because he plays in the Mexican league.

Yeah. I really enjoyed it.
I wonder how much less criticism Bradley would've gotten from some fans if he would've been as candid about the roster.
Would hearing Bradley say something like this have made any difference "Right now, Robbie Finley gives us a better chance to win simply because his pace relieves pressure off of our midfield. We simply need that lack of congestion at this point and Finley is the best option we have to provide it"?

Orozco was terrible for Philadelphia last year.
He was the only starter replaced on the back 4, and Philly went from giving up 49 goals in 30 games to 20 goals in 22 matches.
they went from a GAA of 1.63 to 0.91.
I'm not saying that's completely on him, but the Union declined their buy option, and they're doing considerably better without him.

I wonder if his influence will have an affect on how American players are treated by the managers in Europe. If he going to be getting on the phone with their managers as often as it sounds, they might be more likely to put players like Jozy, Adu, or BB in their starting lineups instead of treating them like 4th tier domestic players.

I never said he's good. Just trying to figure out why he's there.

“I feel we were a very good team two months ago and that we’re a very good team now,” Howard said following the training session at the University of Pennsylvania’s Rhodes Field on Monday. “I know [Klinsmann] will continue to keep us in the direction that we’re going.”
I feel like this is why the USA plateaued. They aren't very good. If they were they'd won the Gold Cup.....They would be considered a top team, etc. etc. It's the leadership of the team that is the weakness IMO. Sure we came back in the World Cup but we were lucky AND EVERYONE gets up for the World Cup.
Don't buy into the "We are Americans and rule arse" philosophy. Speak the truth and say we are mediocre and that we are going to bust out arse to get better and we will get better.

I wonder Grant Wahl passed on my advice...
DEANintheYAY
@GrantWahl tell him that he can consult w/ @USSoccerfan00 (hendersonshands) if he is struggling to find a way to tell Bornstein that he is no longer on USMNT

Nothing brewing on this in the Cottage Corner. But I have often thought CD might one day lean towards coming home. Would absolutely love to see him play for the Dynamo. Nice way to break in a new stadium...

I liked this response:
quote:
SI.com: I wanted to ask you about your captain choice. How will you go about naming one? And how much value do you put in the captaincy role?
Klinsmann: I definitely will name a captain. That will be my call. But I will do it based on a lot of characteristics. How is he seen within the whole team? What is his position in the game out there? What are his qualities on the field? Off the field? I think there are great choices. You have Carlos Bocanegra, who's doing a great job overseas. You have Landon [Donovan], who's very experienced. You have Tim Howard. You have a couple of captains, basically, in the team, and that's good with me. For Wednesday I'll go with one name because only one captain can be out there.
But I'd like over the next couple times we get together to give the older players a sense of their responsibilities. This is really important. They have to understand they are almost as responsible as the coaching staff in order to get the program to the next level. Their mentorship of younger players, their leadership, their body language, their words that they choose: Every day when they get together here in the name of U.S. Soccer, they represent this program and they need to grow into a role of being an example.

At what time did Donovan stop being captain and Bocanegra become captain? We really do seem to lack a vocal leader in the field.

Dempsey wants to play in the Champions League (which would probably mean a move out of England) but other than that I don't think he'd want a move. Unless its just significantly higher wages. He won't be back to the MLS until he's way past his prime.
