Apparently they are moving into Columbia, SC. They are putting billboards up everywhere. Academy was not in Houma when I lived there in the 1980's, so I have never been in one.

Do they have good stuff?

They ight. You'll enjoy their customer service if you like returning stuff at a different store then where you originally purchased it.

Pretty good prices, especially on fishing stuff. Pretty wide variety of activities and like mentioned before, great customer service.

absolutely...it is a hell of a store with an unbelieveable nunber of different products...and honestly, I have never found another store selling any of the products that they carry for less money...

they don't have nearly the hunting/fishing atmosphere like bass pro or cabelas, but they do appeal to a lot broader customer base by carrying lots of equipment/clothig for organized sports activities....

I'm surprised I even remembered that. I hardly post in here anymore(I assume it will go back up in hunting season).

If you can't find it at Academy, then you don't need it!

I'm with you on this one...academy doesn't have certain things that i can only find at bass pro, but i can't speak for all stores. Academy is still a great store and I go there for the routine stuff

Walk in check the womens workout gear straight ahead for any talent on the way to the right side of the store......maybe creep to the back wall for an ice chest but pretty much avoid the middle of the store and left side as it always seems to look like the MS-13 area of the prison yard enjoy

You aint kidding. When I worked at academy we used to laugh behind the gun bar that the store was segregated. Half the store was white only, the middle(apparel) was mixed, and the other half was black only.

I prefer to shop Academy in most cases over BPS.

Light years better than Walmart.

They run some awesome clearance specials on lures and clothes if you will watch for them.

Just my opinion, but Academy is the Walmart of Sporting Goods stores. Yeh, they have the best prices on the items they carry, but I find that you don't find the high end quality items you might want on occasion.

Also, at least the stores I have been to, if you need a knowledgable salesman, go somewhere else. You MIGHT get lucky and the salesman you deal with has the experience you are looking for, by coincidence, but it's a long shot.

Far example, I challenge you to go into one of their stores and pick 4 different unrelated items to "shop" for. Say a shotgun, a treadmill, a good pair of running shoes, and maybe agood quality camping tent. Ask for help and advice on all 4. I'd be shocked if more than one give you any information other than what is printed on the packaging.

Beat me to it.

Suppose a Basspro and a Walmart hooked up (in the club bathroom where Walmart was bartending a snobby Cabelas' wedding reception). Their bastard love child would be: Academy.

And that is as perfect of a way to describe it as anything .........but hey it's the American way right, low prices for shitty quality

If I'm looking to waste time browsing or get something decent I go to basspro or target (on Sunday evenings especially when the mommas are out making groceries)

If I'm looking for a self esteem boost or quick stop to get something cheap and quality doesn't mean so much like deodorant or 9.88/dz decoys I go to walmart or academy
