How to start home AC by manually spinning the fan?

My compressor or something is messed up, can't get it serviced until later this week. How do I get it started by spinning the fan? (it's been done before) TIA

Take off the face of the ac and turn it on then spin the blades the proper direction.

**Caution** this works for a box fan I've never tried it on an AC unit.

I'm not sure if I cut it on after I give it a spin or what. I'm trying to keep all of my fingers for now.

If your compressor is messed up, spinning the fan isn't going to do anything.

Last week there was a guy who knows a little about AC units and he got it started like that and it had been working fine. I can't get ahold of him to ask how he did it.

you can take a twig and give the fan blade a push. this MIGHT make the fan start up, but likely won't kick the compressor on. I did this last summer when my capacitor blew. I fixed it myself for free as opposed to $300 or so.

The fan on the outside unit is spinning fine, I'm talking about inside.

Compressor is outside, dingleberry... that's probably why everyone is confused right now. I hope you lose your thumbs and devolve back into smegma.

I had to do this at the start of the season at my last house. With the air OFF I would shove a screwdriver up against the back of the electric motor shaft and give it a slight turn. It was just enough to break up any buildup so the motor could spin freely when turned on.

go to petsmart and get some hamsters and hamster wheels... you should be able to connect it all together with workout bands and duct tape

Where can I get a replacement capacitor?
Mine has been giving me problems and I have had to manually start it a couple times. Its working fine for now, but I want to replace it before it goes out for good.

You just need to replace the Fetzer Valve

Have you tried fishing in the Mississippi River in a small boat? You should.

re: How to start home AC by manually spinning the fan?
This only works if you have a bad start capacitor on the fan. This will do nothing for the compressor.

This is how it works. When you request your act to come on the compressor starts and the fan outside starts to spin. If the span doesn't spin due to a bad start capacitor the compressor will overheat and shut off due to temperature.

If this is the case as soon as you hear the compressor kick on you can spin the fan to get it started and it will run until it kicks off. When it trys to start again you have to kick the fan off again by hand.

The start capacitors only function is to get the fan motor spinning. After it starts spinning it's job is done. If it's bad it won't ever start the fan and you are SOL.

You roll it down a hill and then when it gets up to a decent speed you pop the clutch.

Oh, wait...

That's for a car that won't start. Never mind.

You will need two people for this, probably.
Turn off the power to the indoor unit.
On the thermostat set the fan to "on" instead of auto.
Take the door off to access the blower.
Have the second person standing at the breaker where you turned the power off from.
Spin the blower wheel in the CORRECT direction.
Have your helper turn the breaker back on.

If it is just a bad capacitor the motor will keep running, do not set your thermostat back to auto for the fan. In other words, let the fan run continuously.
You will be good to go, most likely, until you can replace the capacitor.

One more very important thing, don't listen to a damn thing eitek1 says about A/C matters. Repeating that bull shite to an A/C contractor, or the cashier at Kwiky Mart, will get your arse raped and pillaged, we tend to despise "highly intelligent" people.
