In Mobile tonight and looking for a nice dinner for two. Not into the fried seafood thing. Good quality, casual elegance, doesn't need pretense. Open to all cuisine - asian, indian, mobilian, fresh is good! Staying downtown at Renaissance, but have a car. What ya got?

Tough question because Mobile is one of the worst food towns in the country from my experience.

Afraid of that. How about I back up and ask for a good barstool with food "on the side"?

They have some decent bars downtown though, which is odd for a place to have a good bar scene with virtually no food scene.

Wow, that is a tough one. There is a Ruth's Chris there and I believe a Zea's. I had a good meal at a little place downtown year's ago but it closed. Neat little wine shop/restaurant called the Bakery but I only had drinks there and apps at the bar. Seemed to do a decent business. Might work for a casual night.

I went there too and was going to post it but I looked it up and not sure if it's open or not.

OK, Trip Advisor is telling me about a place called The Royal Scam. Name is so very tempting. Bistro, Tapas, etc. Has my attention so far.

I was somewhat surprised as well. Like I said, I went for a rehearsal dinner a long time ago there and it seemed like a good spot for Mobile. Maybe their product went down or maybe it's just a testament to the Mobile food scene, who knows.

I would think a decent restaurant could crush it there but my friends from Mobile tell me that it's not a foodie town and good places die there all the time for a lack of support.

Hopjack's is also good. Great pizza and fries plus a very extensive beer selection.

Actually the Mobile port has made great strides in a very short period. Good little economic environment in Mobile right now. They have the problem of Daphne/Spanish Fort white flight but who doesn't have that problem.

But why anyone would take a cruise ship from Mobile is beyond me.

True. I thought they were going to eat New Orleans lunch after Katrina, but the sizzle has simmered. The loss of the refueling tanker stung pretty hard. That was a political nightmare up against Boeing and the "domestic" jobs.

Well the trajectory of the two cities over the long-term is far different. NOLA is static at best, unfortunately.

Very parochial mentality though, not so different than the historical protectionists of New Orleans. Hard to break out of that comfort zone.
