I gave complete autonomy in recruiting to Terry Rooney and David Grewe.

"(Rooney and Grewe) decided who we signed and how the scholarship money was distributed.

Mainieri admitted that he had been very hands-off in recruiting.

quote:

"One of the mistakes I made after the national championship season is that I delegated too much," Mainieri said. "That's not a slight of our staff as much as a slight of me. I made so many public appearances, my head was spinning. "I was late coming to practice. I lost contact with the players. That is critical. I'll be more involved in recruiting. I'll be more involved in every aspect of play on the field."

WTF!!! No wonder the team slid! Where was the head coach?!

Football has a recruiting coordinator. Do you see Miles staying out of the process? Hell no! Who is the point man for basketball recruiting? Trent Johnson.

I can't believe a head coach could become so detached regarding a critical component of success.

Kudos to Maineri for standing up and admitting what he has let happen. I am happy he is now dedicating himself to actually being a head coach. The question is why did it take him so long to figure out the problem. Hopefully it is not too late to turn around the ship. He is now taking decisive action, but it should never have come to this.

Hope he's ready to take his lumps. How the heck do you come late to practice if you're the head coach? No wonder the players regressed an had two terrible seasons. Why practice hard if coach won't be there?

I think after 2009 when he won the title he got a lot more media attention. Not only locally, but even nationally. Now I have to wonder how the players feel about him. If he was going late to practice then who knows what else went on.

If the team makes a dramatic comeback next year(Say Ott returns to 2009 stats) then I think we found the answer to our question of why the team went from Champions to goats.

So this makes me wonder if he even knows how much Sanchez stinks.

This isnt football where you have a crap load of coaches.. Why wouldnt the head coach be envolved? Even then I bet Les Miles shows up on time for football practice.

At least he admits it.

I'll admit, I am shocked by that admission.

He should have more say than anyone.

This idea wouldnt shatter the concept that CPM knows whats best for the team because he sees them practice everyday?

Yeah, and you know what happens during practice? You attempt to get better and correct things.

If you're at work and the boss doesn't come in one morning. Chances are people start taking the day off and not doing their jobs.

The late to practice line is bad, but not as bad as having ZERO input on recruiting. That is inexcusable imo. Absolutely ridiculous to not have any say as to the kids that come into your program. Wow...that's horrible.

...At least he admits it. But I think what we've gained from this article is a lot of the team mistakes are directly on PM. So, at least he is taking responsibility.

Its almost as if in a rare change of events CPM threw CPM under the bus.
