As a follow up to the "wives and guns" thread, I first need to figure out what to get before worrying about how to convince the wife of the purchase.

Im looking to start some med/long range shooting (100-500yds) within the next year. Im pretty sure I want to go with a .308 win cartridge and I would like for it to be semi auto.

Experience?

Suggestions?

also what are some good scope options? (think mid-level budget)

I have a Remington 742 30-06 and my brother has one in .308. Good gun, but not very accurate after the second shot (barrel heats up fast). Groups are never very close. We use them when hunting back in the swamps and running dogs. They're plenty accurate for that, but idk about up to 500 yards.

Benelli makes a pretty nice semi auto rifle and the Browning BAR's are badass, but again, not sure about the long range accuracy.

Best bet for shots up to 500 yards would be a bolt action.

Leupold makes good scopes in all budgets. VX11.

Zeiss Conquest is phenomenal for the price IMO.

was afraid of that.

It doesnt really NEED to go out to 500. I'd settle for 300yds

With my Rem 742 (pretty much the same as the 7400 and the 750), I've made a couple of shots close to 300 yards. Mine is a 30-06, but I'm sure the 308 could do it too.

At 100 yards my groups are usually around 3-4" and I can't get them any closer than that.

Are you looking to shoot long range competitively?

If so I would recommend going 223 over 308

Not for competition. Just for fun.

Btw, why .223 over .308?

What is your budget? Pretty hard to argue the long range accuracy of this rifle. Springfield M1A

One of the newer option for what you are looking at is .260 Remington. However if you have to have .308 I recommend this:

Panther LR-308

One of the snipers where I work is very high on it and competes in 500 yard matches at Steel City in AL using a Nikon scope (I forget which one but you wanted budget level) This is just a fun gun for him, but it performs very well.

I stepped up to this:
Panther LRT-SASS

Most likely going with some Badger rings and a Loopy Mark IV

You can find videos and reviews of both all over the internets.

less than $1200.

The only one that I would want is the Springfield SOCOM and its a little out of my price range

For $1200 you will not be able to buy anything but the Remington new unfortunately.

You could get a used M1A probably. I haven't priced them in a long time though.
