These were banned in the top two divisions in The UK after hillsborough. There seems to be a big push to reinstate them. Germany has a seating system that allows for people to stand at domestic games and sit at Euro games. UEFA requires all stadiums to have seats not standing areas like the UK. If they could do it in a safe way, I think the standing areas would be a good idea because they add to the culture of the game, and might make a ticket cheaper. Any thoughts on this?

Good article from EPL website

Read this yesterday morning in class. Don't think its going to happen. My gut reaction would be not to support it simply because of history but if they found some safer way to organize it then I'd be open to the idea. Standing room only in baseball in the US is pretty popular and accident free over its history.

It's pretty popular because we don't have idiot fans who incite fights with other fans.

This is an incredibly dumb idea.

Campaign for Standing

Have a look at this article. It explains how the bundesliga, the most profitable league uses it.

Do you really think football culture in England is the same as it was in the 80's and early 90's? I highly doubt today's fans would resort to the same sectarian violence that those fans did (although I'm not saying it wouldn't happen occasionally).

I'm not in favor of it but I'm sure there's a safer approach that would arguably work. I'm open to hearing it, but until I do I'm opposed.

UEFA and FIFA demand all seater stadiums and getting those two assoc. to change is beyond impossible...BTW one death could bankrupt a football club and the association now.

There's still a certain quorum amongst football fans that would be considered unacceptable in America. The vitriolic speech and choice of words is still pretty violent.

British football fans haven't been priced out of the stadiums quite like some make it out to be. There's still a very heavy working class element to football games, especially amongst the non-mega clubs.

esp. in Scotland...though a ticket to Ibrox or the east end of Glesga will set you back a few bob...

These rail seats are convertible and everyone would have a ticket with a row and spot number.

It's still unsafe regardless of spot numbers and rails. The main reason for the Bundesliga's profitability is the size of their cities and stadiums compared to England. I highly doubt

There's a reason terraced seating was banned, and Liverpool fans should be the first to be against it.

I am but I also realize its 2011 and there are ways to fix the bad things of the past. Its unlikely I'll ever support it but I'm just saying I'm open to hearing how it can be made safer that's all. If nothing else just to see how far we've come from those two tragedies.

violence doesn't have anything to do with terraces being closed btw.

It's crushing and the fact that it's a mass of people who are by no means stationary.

Standing wasn't the reason there was a tragedy. It was because the fans were funneled into one cage and there was a stampede.

As a person who was touched by the Ibrox disaster I find this proposition almost stomach turning...went to a Pearl Jam concert in Prague back in the day and we were herded into what only could be described as a holding pen with rails in front of the stadium Pearl Jam's equipment was late arriving by an hour and a half and if not for some Marine Corp buddies smashing a floor to ceiling window my wife and I would have been crushed...crowds have a collective mentality that my whole life I have been fascinated with...at turns it is a pack or a mob mentality and other times it can be sweet or kidding around...in any case I would never allow my son into a ground that had terraced standing sections...those children that died at Hillsborough and Heysel and Ibrox deserve better.

I beg to differ people lost their footing and were under foot in many instances trampled to death by their own supporters.

Only because they put too many people in too small of an area. I'm not suggesting that at all. Read the article I linked. These areas are specifically designed so a crush doesn't happen.
