I got a nice drake mallard this weekend that I would like to have mounted. Any recommended taxidermists in the BR area?

Also, I have never had a bird mounted so I'm not sure how I want to have it mounted. Any suggestions?

Finally, any idea on the range of costs I can expect? I don't mind paying a bit more for quality work.

Thanks

depends on where you want it in your house.

1 - the standard "fly by"

2 - mounted bird standing up on feet for desk top

3 - dead mount - hanging upside down by its foot like it hangs on a stringer.

With option 3, you can always add more birds to it later.

I have a dead mount collection consisting of right now, 1 green head, 1 speckled belly, and 2 blue wing teal. Hope to add a pintail and 2 green wing teal to it and be done

I really like the desk top too. Its different.

Roughly $200-300 for a mount, depending on the guy and the pose

Its a bit of a haul, but Dave Luke in Breaux Bridge is considered to be among the foremost taxidermists specializing in wildfowl.

+1 Dave Luke is as good as there is around here IMO...got a pintail drake mounted by him last season and will bring my birds to him from here on...you truly get what you pay for with him and will be extremely pleased...mount cost me $280 but is worth every penny for the beauty of it

+1 on David Luke, Birds are his thing, I "ran" into him last week and he is a super guy as well, his website speaks for it self, and honestly I was surprised to read the other post about his mounts being $280, I figured they would go $4-500

Luke's site says his studio is in Mandeville. Did he move to Breaux Bridge?

Thanks for the insight. Does anyone have any experience with Sonny Amato?
Sonny Amato gallery

He is the only local taxidermist I have spoken with (only one with a web page/gallery) and his stuff looks pretty nice. Quoted $350 for a duck mount. Stated that he does some steps like (paraphrasing) a dawn (soap) cleaning that prevents fat/oil from the duck causing issues like attracting dust that can ruin the mount or make it unattractive after a a few years. Is this a legit concern with bird mounts and something that I should be sure any taxidermist does?

Can anyone post pics of their mounts from some of the names mentioned in here?

Any jackass who charges 4 or 5 for a duck needs to be shot himself. Eh, take that back. The person who needs to be shot is the one who pays him that. That is a complete joke...

I can suggest only Kevin Hynes in Slidell (also a Best in World). May be too far for you. Here's mine:

If you want the BEST at a price no higher than the others charge, look no further than Billy Ollie, Master Taxidermist and winner of Best in the World-Waterfowl Division at the World Taxidermy Championships. He is a bird specialist and his work is unparalled...

The actual studio is in Breaux Bridge, its worth a visit if your in the neighborhood. He has a few hundred mounts that are unbelievably lifelike on display..
