.35 Whelen and it's not even close, unlose you throw in the recoil. I have shot them all, but mainly the 45-70 and .35 and it is not even close. None are bad, but really, it's not even close considering what the Whelen is capable of...

Can't use the .35 in Louisiana (I believe)

I have the .45-70 and it shoots well. Have heard the .444 is better. I don't really worry about a rifle I will only use two or three times a year.

Didn't know this.

As far as the .35, I have several friends who only use it, whether it's rifle or primitive season. They have it in the Encore. They choose to shoot it over .280's and 7 mags. Probably just because they like the Encore, but it really is unbelievable on the range. I can't understand how they can call something like it primitive...

The .35 wheelen isn't approved for LA so that may be a factor. I purchased a 45-70 because that is what my local shop had at the time. I believe the .444 is a little more flat shooting.

Does anybody know if the 444. has less recoil then the 45-70?

I started using my 45-70 3 years ago and didn't shoot a deer with another rifle until this year. The 45-70 is unbelievable. I personally haven't shot a deer further then 100 yards with it but have heard it is good up to between 150 - 200 yards. Probably closer to 150.

35whelen is the correct answer, if you could hunt with it during primitive, which I'm pretty sure you can't. OMHO, the 45-70 and 444 are close to being a push.

re: 444, 45-70, 35 wheelen

this is a good thread. i am looking at the 444 and 45-70 at the local wally world.

this might help out according to ldwf:

Single shot, breech loading rifles,
.38 caliber or larger of a kind or
type manufactured prior to 1900
and replicas, reproductions or
reintroductions of that type rifle
having an exposed hammer that
use metallic cartridges loaded
either with black powder or modern
smokeless powder. All of the
above may be fitted with magnified
scopes.

I'd consider the buffalo classic 45-70 if i was you. A little bit more $ but well worth it.

35 Whelen is not legal in LA, but has the best ballistics and least recoil.

45-70 and 444 have about the same recoil. 444 shoots a little flatter and 45-70 has more energy (but, both the 35 and 444 have plenty enough energy).

I have a 444 H&R HandiRifle. I can get about 2" groups at 100 yards.

I have the H&R .444, very pleased. They say good to 200y on whitetail.

Contacted H&R and ordered their synthetic survivor stock and forend. Awesome. Very lightweight. The pistol grip really helps with the recoil.

They are about the same. Not really a big factor though. My 7mm Mag kicks harder. The recoil from my 444 is more like someone pushing you really hard in the shoulder than a violent kick.

It will start to wear you out if it takes 15 or 20 shots to site in.

The .45-70 synthetic handi rifle shooting Hornady Leverevolutions is simply brutal on the shoulder. One shot at an animal is bearable but bench rest is down right torture. Make sure you have some damn good scope mounts.
