I am looking to get some new steel shot this year. Last year i used a combination of old shells that i found in my dads gun cabinet and am gonna buy a case of something a little better for this season. I have heard that black cloud is a good shell but maybe a little pricey.

Any reviews for this:

Also, I normally shoot #2 but am thinking about getting BB or BBB this year. What is everyone's thoughts/preferences on shot size?

FWIW, i mainly hunt fields

i imagine those will be a pretty good shell at an affordable $20/box...i wouldn't recommend shooting anything under #2 shot...that will be plenty to kill even big mallards...you would only need BB/BBB for geese

I have done a lot of duck guiding, and we use Kent Faststeel and Winchester Xpert or whatever is cheaper.

If you hit them they will die.

this... If you shot well enough and know how your gun shots certain shells you should be fine with anything.

Remington Sportsman Hi-Speed. 3in 3 shot. My favorite shells to shoot.
But, I usually shoot Winchester Xpert Hi-Velocity 3in 3 shot because thats what I can afford.

2's, 3's or 4's. Whatever brand. I prefer at least 1 3/8 ounce shot. If I wasn't such a law abiding citizen I would shoot 3" Fiocchi #4 lead packed with 1 7/8 oz shot. By far the most deadly shotgun shell for waterfowl, theoretically of course.

I mostly shoot Kent Fassteel and Xperts in 3" #3's and 2's. I did, however, buy a box of the Hypersonic steel just for kicks to try out. I always like to try out new stuff when it comes around. It advertises to be at 1700 FPS but Kent Fassteel and Xpert both have offered shells at 1625 or so for a few years so don't anticipate that much of a difference, it's still steel. Also, those high velocity loads generally kick the hell out of you compared to a bit cooler load around 1450-1500 fps.

I've hunted waterfowl for over 40 years. Last year I tried some low brass #6's, and 7's in steel. Cost around 7 bucks a box. Over decoys inside of 30 yds, with not much wind, there awesome. I put 1 in the chamber and back it up with a high brass 4, then a 3inch #4. A deadly coctail.

I shoot Kent FastSteel 3" #3s mainly. We get a lot of teal and very few mallards so I go for the in between. I usually prefer the heavier load. (TWSS?)

I have shot the Estates and the Xperts also. The experts do not pattern as well for the longer shots due to an unrounded pellet. So for the same price or cheaper, I've made the switch to Kents.

Haven't tried the supers yet, I think they are new this year. I'll wait until someone at the camp out-shoots me with them before I pay $80 more per case

my 2 cents for what its worth...

went hunting a handful of times and bought a few boxes of kent steel shots(cant remember the size. well on the best/easiest shot of the day i saw the bb's roll out the end of my barrel. personally i'd spend a few more dollars to get a better brand then kent. after speaking with a few other hunters, they said they heard/had simiiliar experiences with kent shells. i'll never buy them again.

You can't let Kent shells get wet. Other than that you will be fine.

I usually shoot 3" #2 1-3/8 oz Winchester dryloks. I used to shoot #1's in the same oz. but they are all but impossible to find now except for one place that I know of and it's usually a hassle to get them. We hunt rice fields in Ark/No Louisiana and geese are always a possibility and I am convinced the 1 3/8 oz shot holds tighter on windy days. I've seen too many people shoot 1-1/4 oz #4's and wonder why they aren't hitting anything on a real windy day with longer shots. When we're in the woods you can shoot pretty much any cheap shell you want since the shots are so close.
