What do you classify as long range? 300 yds, 500, 1000?

I really don't know if it helps any and look forward to the responses. I know standard .270 and 30-06 are great at 300 yds and even 500 but they aren't cheap to shoot.

If you are shooting bench rest at silhouettes 500yds or less the .308 would be a good choice. At extreme distance the .338 Lapua has proven itself and holds the record for longest confirmed kill. Just get you pocket book ready for the gun and ammo.

.308 is the caliber that is used in most competitions for long range shooting. Relatively inexpensive compared to other long range calibers.

Amazing gun. Probably won't get one under $2k, and ammo is expensive as hell.

If you're talking about for hunting, a 7mm Mag is a great choice.

A shooting club that my FIL knows took 7 out of 10 spots at a competition in NV earlier this year. He said that most were either using a wildcat round that they made or a 22-250.

Biggest issue I could see with a 22-250 is wind.

definitely. That .22-250 is shooting a very small piece of lead. The .308 does so well since it uses a heavy projectile and has a very predictable flight pattern.

When I was looking for similar I decided on .308

If it was good enough for the Marine Sniper Rifles for so many years I figured it was good enough for me.

6.5x47, 260remington, 6mm br all better than 308 or anything else posted so far. However they aren't common and you should of course reload.

Still is being used by snipers in the Army and Marine Corps.

Biggest advantage I see to .308 is the wealth of knowledge dealing with ballistic tables not to mention the multitude of off the shelf ammo that will shoot better than most people are capable.

I suggested a .264 Win. Mag. I own a .260 Rem, .270 Rem and .243 Win. The .264 Win Mag wins hand down and will out preform any caliber you listed.

Out of everything that has been listed I'd probably pick the .308 for reasons stated.

But, If you want to look at the some of the more obscure rounds I'd bet that than none of them would beat a .257 Weatherby.

How about an answer to what "long range" means. The answers for 300, 600, 900, or 1500 yards will be very different.
