Looking at planting some fruit and nut trees for deer. Thinking about Persimmon, Hickory, Chestnut, White Oak, Muscadine, Walnut, Pear and Plum. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Yeah, saw tooth. Why? Not a good choice?

Fan, you can go to the ag center in your area (at least I know in the monroe area) and purchase quite a few of those trees very cheaply. I know they sell mayhaws, hickories, and saw-tooths. Usually around a dollar each, but they are only one year old.

Deer also love locust trees (the bean pods). Especially the honey locust (vs the water locust).

I like the saw tooth oaks, they grow fast and make alot of acorns. I have read on the interwebz that they make a bitter acorn and deer dont eat them well. They eat them pretty damn good on my lease. My in-laws have 5 of these trees in their yard and we pay the kids a few bucks to pick up the acrons and we put them out around our stands. Deer will tear them up.

Saw tooths are good. Never heard about the bitter acorn thing. The only problem I have with them is that they drop a little early.

I was talking about the hickory. For deer? Never known a deer to eat hickory nuts.

amen to that. I'm finding deer hairs daily on the thorns sticking out at thigh level. It's like Walmart for does right now.

I'm planting some persimmon trees. Deer love them.

I would go with Persimmon, Sawtooth Oak, White Oak, Muscadine (a vine), Pear, Apple, and Plum.

Honey locust are great too but are hell on tractor tires.

If you have bought any black walnuts from the Monroe agcenter, they are probably ours. We have several large black walnuts and the forestry people come by every year and pick up all the walnuts they can find. They plant them and then sell the trees.

I'm sure they would . . . if hungry enough. There is a good bit of "meat" in them.

The agcenter isn't worried about just deer, but having a sustainable forest. There are very few black walnuts, thus they feel the need to collect them.

Lots of meat but they are damn hard to get into. They do make the best icecream though.

Sawtooth
Muscadine
Honeysuckle
Apple
Honey Locust
Pear

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. Thank you all for your input. I looked up my local ag center on the interwebz, I will swing by there and see what they have.

whatever you plant, put a cage around it if you plant seedlings. Deer tend to eat the tops off of hardwood seedlings late in the season. Talk to local forest consultants about proper seedling care and planting timing and tips. Buy packages of bare-root seedlings rather than 6' commercial potted trees.
