He seems to be emulating LM/GC's passing philosophy these days in his 6th season at USCe:

CF rivals

"Spurrier is an offense-minded guy whose Fun 'n' Gun attacks at Florida were quarterback-centric. But Spurrier hasn't been able to develop top-notch passers at South Carolina. Junior Stephen Garcia has become more consistent this season, but the Gamecocks are relying on the punishing running of freshman tailback Marcus Lattimore to go along with that stout defense."

quote:

Can you be content to run the ball to win? "We would like to have more balance. But if we aren't a very good passing team, it doesn't make sense for the quarterback to go back and get sacked all the time."

quote:

Why have you struggled to develop a top quarterback at South Carolina? "I don't have the answer for that. I don't have the answer for that. We have coached them just as hard, I can assure you, as we coached the guys I had at Florida. I don't really have the answer why a quarterback hasn't really emerged."

What does he know about winning in the SEC anyway? They need to fire him for not developing Garcia. The man was a 4 star recruit! No excuse for him not being successful...blah blah blah.

It is quite strange, though, as he has had good receivers during his time at USC. Hmm, that sounds familiar, too. Other than Mallet is there really an upper tier QB in the SEC this season? The current starters are either young, works in progress like at AU, or pedestrian in skill and productivity. I am clueless as to what is going on at OM, I couldn't dream that up on my on.

SOS didn't develop qbs. They were either smart with candy arse arms or good arms and dumb as dirt. None of them worked out in the pros. His O was actually WR-centric. It depended on WR's being wide open, not qb's making great plays.

Man that speech was dagger in the back of Garcia.

Deep inside SOS would probably like to bench Gar'zs azz. The reality is his RB's were a huge part of his offense. See Fred Taylor in '96 and Ernest Graham in '01. If Latimore can keep his pace it will open up the passing game bigtime.

Although he never had a QB with top NFL caliber talent (which is not a requirement to become an above average college QB), if the QB's he had matched your assertion perfectly then what Spurrier accomplished was even more amazing. This is the first time I have ever read someone say WR's drove an offense and no one with a working understanding of UF's offense nor the opponent's defenses was needed to distribute the ball on time or with precision. Basically, that a turnip with a bazooka for an arm could be effective QB in the Spurrier offense.

If he carries the rock 37x a game like vs UGA he will have a short career.

Totally irrelevant.

His job was not to develop QB's for the pros, his job was to develop QB's for his system, and he was a master at it.

One of the dumbest posts ever on the Rant, and that is saying a lot. Spurrier in his prime was possibly the best developer of QBs in the history of college football. Whether they made it in the NFL is not relevant. Spurrier preferred the cerebral QBs with average physical skills, to the Mallett-types with rocket arms. The physical specimen type players never worked out in his system. They couldn't handle his coaching.

He was pretty much just a QB coach period. He worked with them day, after day, after day. He was a slave driver, treated them like s%$t, and benched their azz in a heart beat if they screwed up. He was a damn good QB himself even though it's hard to believe anything good could come out of Tenn.

Doesn't McElroy have the best rating in the SEC?

Yeah. A $3 million coach who's willing to throw his 21 year old kids under the tractor.

That's leadership, yo!

I am not a fan of Les Miles, but he would never talk like that about a player. Spurrier is now, as always, a dick.

Part of the issue is that defenses have caught up in the SEC with the Fun n Gun type of offenses that Spurrier used to have.

Talk about a player like what?
What did he say that is so horrible?

Playing teams like Duke can do that for you, can't it. The player formerly known as a mere game manager is leading the SEC in QB rating?

Even conceding McElroy, where are the good QB's? Relf stinks, Russell might become good by next season, Brantley can't even seem to get the center exchange, Vandy's QB will never scare a team throwing the ball, OM??, Newton is still learning the position, Garcia is decent IMO, Simms at UT? UGA's QB is a work in progress. Where are the above average SEC QB's?

...because of a lack of development? This is simply a dumb statement.
