I have a deer hunt coming up in 4 weeks in Idaho. I have a crappy scope and feel it's pretty important to get something with a little better distance and clarity. Today I looked at the Zeiss 3x9x40.....Frickin loved it and priced at $399. Then went into a local hunting store where the owner offered me his Nikon Monarch 4x12x40 for $250. What do ya'll think? Seemed pretty similar to me.....but don't know much about this discontinued version.

I'd go Zeiss hands down, of course it depends on the model. Zeiss has decidedly better optics though and from my experience are great at gathering light.

zeiss and zworovski,,you will maximize every ounce of daylight going with these two..wouldn't shoot a gun without them. go with zeiss.

I have a Zeiss conquest that I paid a hell of a lot more then that for. It's a higher power, that may be the difference in price. I love it so far, but time will tell.

The Monarch is a GREAT scope, especially for the price. My dad and brother have been shooting one for years and have had ZERO problems or complaints. My deciding factor would be the power of the scope. I don't like a 3-9 scope on my deer rifle.

So what power do you like for your deer rifle? The used monarch has a little extra umph here but I definitely liked the clarity more.

4-12 or there abouts. Did you just say the monarch is used? I would never buy a used scope. May just be me, but I wouldn't.

You can get that zeiss for $399? Go for it!!!

Like I advised you earlier, Monarch is the best choice for the price. Zeiss is front of the class. Swarovski is top of the class.

Either way, I think you will be able to shoot with confidence.

War tiger is correct. If you buy used, make sure you put through the paces before you leave, and as always, bring a backup rifle.

Holy shite. I'm jealous. Sending my .270 to get the "mommy makeover" as my wife calls it. I can't wait.

Good luck on the hunt, guys. That's good times right there. Going on a trip to west texas this year with a good friend. Making memories, yall.

Building a new boxstand because they just thinned our land. Getting excited. I see anothe 150+ Louisiana hill beast this year!

The one I'm on will go about 135, I think.

We should go shoot sometime. I'm open to some pointers.

Also, let me know if you need any help building a stand or working the land. I love that shite!

Another "just like sunglasses" thread. No one who spends $400 on a scope will tell you it's crappy.

Well ATL,

I have shot shitty scopes before.
I can vouch for Monarch, Zeiss and Swarovski.
Luepolds seem to be popular but I can't see throught them very well.

It is not like sunglasses at all. It is having much, much greater quality glass.
The Japanese and the Germans are really good at making it.

Yeah, I said "Germans"

Anyone who has shot much will say that the scope makes a rifle. I know a lot of guys that shoot lesser scopes, but I know a lot of guys that nail fat girls as well.
