scenario #1. take a job in houston (oil field) where pay is good but fight traffic and i dont have many friends or family there.

scenario #2. Take a job in shreveport (oil field) where i have grown up, where family and friends are there and pay is a little less and less of a chance to move up or move around jobs

depends on how important being around famliy is..I would rather make less money and be close to family.........others might prefer to be as far from family as possible.....

Great time to live in a new city for a few years, assuming you have never moved out of Louisiana. I'd leave since this job will seemingly give you more room for promotion in the future.

**And you'd still be within driving distance to come home every month or so.

I've lived at least 8-10 hours from family since I was 19. It's good, makes you grow up and be responsible. Only regret is that I would have liked being closer when my children were growing up. I think they would have benefitted from being close to grandparents & cousins. We always loaded up everything and had Christmas with the family until they got in high school - took a lot of planning, but we managed. Good luck whatever you end up doing!

#1 If you don't like it you can always go back to Shreveport and find a job there with your experience. Might not always have the option of such a good job in Houston.

What kind of job are we talking about?

Same level in both Houston and Shreveport?

Moving hours away from family for graduate school was one of the smartest decisions of my life. Take that for what it's worth. I just feel every man should go out and experience the world completely on their own before they settle down.

At 24, #1 hands down.

The contacts and experience will make a huge difference in your career options at 44.
