A few of us are going out of Cocodrie Sat. morn. and getting back Sun. afternoon.

We're going after yellowfin and whatever else bites.

We've all been out deep-sea fishing a number of times but never this far off shore, nor for an overnight trip.

Any advice?

The plan was to head out to the floaters, probably upwards of 100 miles of shore.

edit - "offshore"

Tuna can be taken on large diamond jigs very deep but moving up as the night progresses.
Catch some hardtails if you can on the way out - big AJs, grouper, etc. on the anchors.. you can follow the chains down with your sonar.

Put a dipnet in the boat to catch squid on side the boat for extra bait.

run long and bring plenty of fuel.. every trip i have had this year we have ran over 100 miles use poppers if there are ne tuna busting on the top. use diamond jigs under the lights even if you dont see ne thing. bring some poggies or sardines to chunk with.. bring small hardtail/always tuna crack.

I should have mentioned that we are going out with Capt. Gray Long.

We're bringing a few guys that don't have a lot of offshore experience, so it should be interesting.

Of course we are getting everyone to down some dramamine, but man I'm pumped up.

Thanks to all of those for the advice. Just as a FYI, we took 8 good yellowfins, 5 bigeyes, 25 blackfins, and a great sized amberjack on the trip this past weekend

Was one hell of a trip, weather was perfect and the fish were biting. Will do another sometime in the near future.

Sounds like a great trip! Any idea on how far you had to run? All I've heard is that the tuna have moved way out, like 150 miles from Cocodrie.

We were out about 130-140 miles...it was a long long run.
All of the yellows and bigeyes were caught at various rigs.
However, we were chasing schools of blackfin that we spotted on the way to the rigs at about 100 miles out. Either way, it took a good long while to get out there.

He didn't seem to carry any extra fuel, didn't ask him though. I couldn't tell ya how much fuel we burned, had to be a good bit.

Also, you were right man, Gray is helluva captain. He put us on the fish, did about everything for us, and was incredibly nice. He made it the best fishing trip of my life and I've been on some great trips before.

we were running 2 300 4 stoke yammies. on the way out was slick so we ran over between 40 and 50 mphthe whole way. that was a mistake(burned to much fuel). on the way in ran about 37 mph and burned about 250 gallons(the boat hold 290). in all seas were flat and i mean flat. if you have any other questions leme kno i would be more than happy to answer them.

roughly 200 per person with 6 people and beer and food... went with conundrum 4 weeks back and that is approx. about how much it was with 6 of us.

With Capt. Gray Long, the price for an overnighter is $3000 and that includes fuel. It's well worth the price, incredible experience.

Glad to hear that y'all had a good trip too. Were the barracuda as bad for y'all as they were for us? They were knocking off the blackfins left and right.

Also, how big was that marlin over at Brutus? My brother saw it come out of the water and swore up and down that it was 400-500 lbs.
