Don't waste your money. It is gimmicky even for an 8 year old. Get a Xbox or PS3 for him

My 10 yr old played his 5-6 days a week for the first 3 months that we had it.....now, it probably hasn't been touched in close to a year.

You could pick New Super Mario Bros, or Super Mario Galaxy for him. I have Rock Band 2, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Modern Warfare Reflex, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Tiger Woods, Zelda, Wii Fit, I play mine regularly and I have all 3 consoles so don't believe all the Wii bashing you here.

i have a wii... your kid will enjoy it, but the moving around will get old quick... but that doesnt mean he will stop playing it...

Nintendo has always done a great job with the titles they have done for years.

Mario, Zelda, (Donkey Kong this christmas)... these are the games do well.. Pikmin even.. These games require little movement and are very fun. these games make nintendo, not motion technology.

if you do buy it... do something for yourself and buy a bunch of throwback games off of the virtual console... you wont regret it. Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Donkey Kong, These games will keep him happy as well.

Fail. It's awesome for kids & the games are aimed at them. Get some Mario & Zelda games.

A lot of great games have been mentioned. This may be a no brainer, but don't get him any real sports games. I would still have my wii if I hadn't picked up ncaa 2009. I wanted to break the console after popping that trash in

There's more creativity in a single level of Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 than in any of these cookie cutter, online multiplayer FPSs that are fluffed to hell and back on this board
.
Other good ones:
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Super Paper Mario
Okami
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Punch-Out!!
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mario Kart Wii
Wii Sports Resort
Resident Evil 4 Wii
Sin & Punishment

Coming out soon:
Metroid: Other M
Zelda: Skyward Sword
Goldeneye 007
Donkey Kong Country Wii
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Epic Mickey

Then why are PS3 and X360 releasing motion sensing peripherals this year?

Let me help you gasman. It is because the Wii has captured a significant share of the gaming market that enjoy genuinely fun games, without focus on graphics, difficulty, and hardcore gaming. The system is for an 8 year old, not an 18 year old. The latter wants deep, intense, hardcore games with storylines (optional); the former will enjoy the next Rayman Rabbids game.

If the Wii was the epic failure this board made it out to be, sony and microsoft would not have been developing the Move and Kinect, respectively.

I would suggest buying games that you are fairly interested in as well. The foundation of the wii is the party style game that encourages multiple players. Expect to be roped into many games of mario kart, brawl, and wii sports

Why not just get an emulator if you're going to use it for "throwback games".

If you have to get 2 games for him, get Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. They are both masterpieces.
