*Spoilers*

So the wife and I have been working our way through the seasons of Buffy the Vampire slayer on netflix, and we reached this episode. Episode 16 , season five is "The Body", and it depicts the the death of Buffy's mother.

It's probably one of the most moving and heart wrenching hours of TV I've ever watched. There's no background music (a staple on other episodes) and little in the way of supernatural/sci-fi. It's all about grief and shock of losing a loved one suddenly, and if you've ever gone through that it's very good at depicting the confusion and pain that comes along with it. You know an episode is powerful when you're still thinking about it the next morning.

If you've enjoyed any of Joss Whedon's other shows (Firefly, Doll House, Angel) and haven't watch Buffy I would definitely recommend it.

I actually just watched this episode for the first time earlier this week.

It hardly feels like a Buffy episode... Whedon does a lot of experimentation with setting the mood via camera angles that you don't see from him often. He's usually far more dialogue-driven than actual cinematography.

And when Buffy does fight a vampire at the end, it almost feels out of place. Very strange, but a very good and moving episode.

angel is a terrible show

I watched the first season simultaneously with season 4 of Buffy and just had to stop. Buffy is such a better show and it's not worth putting myself through an hour of listening to Cordelia and Wesley being retarded in order to get on with the next Buffy episode.

If you only watched the first season of Angel, then you really never saw the heights of that show. Remember Buffy Season One? You couldn't judge that whole series based on that season. Same with Angel.

As to the original post, "The Body" is one of the top episodes of television I've ever seen. It moved me a great deal when I first saw it and continues to do so today. Anya's speech is probably my favorite moment followed by the visual of Dawn's reaction to the news.

It's a chilling show to watch and really won me over to watch the entire series (saw this episode as a standalone after seeing bits and pieces of Buffy occasionally). Ended up getting my hands on season one immediately and began catching up with the other seasons via FX. When anyone gives me crap about Buffy being a bad show, or stupidly themed show, I point them to this episode to show how outstanding it could be.

Definitely this. The first season was easily the worst, but there are some episodes later that compare with the best of Whedon's other shows.

I think Angel is a better show than Buffy. Angel is a deeper, more complex character than Buffy. He's also darker, which makes the show itself darker.

I like Angel's character... it's the other ones who kill the show (at least the first season)

I do intend on watching it after I finish Buffy, but I don't think it's worth it to go back and forth with the two.

Disagree think season 6 is the worst.

You talking Buffy Season 6 or Angel Season 5 (Angel didn't go past Season 4). I'd agree with Season 6 of Buffy being that series' worst. I actually enjoyed the last season of Angel. Without revealing any spoilers, I thought the new setting was interesting and allowed for some interesting developments. Just felt too rushed in the last few episodes. I blame the WB for that though.

That's fair. I never cared much for Doyle either. I think what Angel did so much better than Buffy, especially in the cases of Cordelia and Wesley, is show how their work with Angel changes their characters.

The growth of Wesley may actually be one of my favorite aspects of Angel. Let us know what you think once you end up going through it.

Of Buffy yes. I was talking about Angel.

And the last season of Angel is really really good.
