Possible scenarios for USA? Help me out here....
If we beat Algeria and Slovenia ties England, all 3 countries are tied. So it then goes to goals scored? If so, what happens if we all 3 have the same amount of goals?
If England beats Algeria and Slovenia, we become tied for 2nd. Goes back to # of goals scored.
So we basically need to score a ton against Algeria, have England and Slovenia not score as much, all the while assuming we beat Algeria......
Frick it I am going back to work......

no. we would be solely in 2nd with 5 points.
it's very tough for us not to advance. if we beat algeria, the scenarios for us NOT to advance are nearly impossible. slovenia and england would have to like tie 3-3.

Three points for a win.
Assume England beats Algeria.
Then, in the final matches, we beat Algeria (expected).
England beats Slovenia (England would be favored but this ain't a cinch.)
Final Group Standings would be:
England 7
USA 5
Slovenia 4
Algeria 0
This would be our best hope to advance.

dude, best case scenario is england loses to Algeria, then beats Slovenia. That gives England and Slovenia both 4. The USA beats Algeria, giving Algeria 3 and the USA 5, we finish first and England at second

so if England/Slovenia tie and we beat Algeria to get to 5 points, it will go to goals scored for US/England/Slovenia to decide which 2 advance?

Bottom line is we have almost full control over getting to the knockout round. No matter what happens if we win 2-0 almost no way for us to not go through.
Sucks that the ref took that last goal away, but we still should have scored a couple other times. Regroup and beat Algeria's arse.

The worst possible scenario for us is if England beats Algeria and ties Slovenia.
In that scenario, if we beat Algeria, the three teams would have 5 points.
It would therefore come down to goal differential, and thus basically goes down to who beat Algeria by the most.
Slovenia beat Algeria 1-0.
Therefore, we must beat Algeria by 2 goals to be sure of advancement.

I think they look at goal difference before and if it's tied then goals scored

Correct. We beat Algeria by 2 goals, we lock up a spot in the next round.
If we only win by 1 goal, it could get interesting.

goal differential first, so slovenia's would be +1. ours and england's depends on the game against algeria. assume they all win 1-0 against algeria.
then it goes to goals scored, in which ours is good since a 2-2 tie is unlikely for england-slovenia.
a 2-0 win against algeria GUARANTEES us through.

not to hijack, but....
if let's say england ties algeria today 0-0,
then both games on wednesday end in ties....
slovenia will be the only team out of our group with a win (automatically advancing), and england/US team with the most goals will advance with only 4 points??

well theyd only have 3 points, but yeah

ok, yeah my fault. both england and US would have 3 points and whoever had more goals would advance with the #2 seed.
so basically when people say you need 5 points to advance, that's false?

So as long as England beats slovenia, and we beat algeria, we should be in good shape?

yeah that advances us. if we win, we are in. technically not so dont tell people that, but it's basically true.

Assume England is going to beat Algeria, let's not go pie in the sky.
That means we have to beat Algeria (and if we don't, we don't deserve to go through anyway). If we win and EITHER Slovenia or England win, we're through. If we win and they draw, things get interesting.
First tiebreaker is Goal differential. Beat Algeria by 2, there's no way Slovenia can catch us (because in order for them to get a GD above ours, they'd BEAT England, putting us through with a win).
Beat Algeria by 1, we'll tie Slovenia on GD and it will go to total goals scored. We have a 1-1 draw already, so we have 3 goals as does Slovenia. Root for us to score a lot. Even if we don't win by more than 2, we need to score lots of goals. 3-2 is better than 1-0.
