Containment Dome status???

Does anyone know the status of the operation? It was reported to be about 1000 ft away from its final location before dawn... I know this operation is very difficult and new at these depths, but I would think we would know more about the progress.

Seriously, I ve been looking for info on this as well. I guess no news is good news at this point. I think they would have said if they made the situation worse.

And I was afraid of the opposite, that in not hearing anything they are fighting with it and the possibility that this dome will not work...

Last I heard it still had not touched down. They are being extremely careful, as expected.

I saw an article that said it was in place. However, they had so much of the info wrong I think they dont know what they are talking about.

A BP-chartered vessel lowered a 100-ton concrete-and-steel vault onto a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, an important step in a delicate and unprecedented attempt to stop most of the gushing crude fouling the sea.
Underwater robots guided the 40-foot-tall box into place. Now that the contraption is on the seafloor, workers will need at least 12 hours to let it settle and make sure it's stable before the robots can hook up a pipe and hose that will funnel the oil up to a tanker.
"It appears to be going exactly as we hoped," BP spokesman Bill Salvin told The Associated Press on Friday afternoon, shortly after the four-story device hit the seafloor. "Still lots of challenges ahead, but this is very good progress."

Definitely a start. From the picture I saw it looked like they didn't put a valve on top of the containment? I was wondering how they were going to regulate / shutoff the flow to make the final hookups at the surface?

I'm not counting my chickens just yet...it seems that the risks associated with the pipe taking it to the surface would be more numerous and more significant than the risks associated with the placement of the cofferdam. So who here has enough knowledge of the dynamics of this thing to say whether or not the reservoir pressure is enough to get it to the surface? what are the potential problems?

This is just a WAG, but I would have to say absolutely. The things is flowing out a hundred thousand or more gallons a day against sea water pressure, which is over 2000 psi at that depth. So I am pretty sure this well will push that column of oil from seabed to sea level, which is only five thousand feet. There may even be a pressure assist from the seawater pressure.
But you make a very good point. This is probably why they worked so hard to seal off that other leak in the riser (to increase the pressure in the dome). It is also probably one of the reason they are pumping that surface seawater down to keep the tubing warm because warm oil will flow a whole lot better than cold oil.

The oil has a lower density than the water so it'll float naturally...think of it like a bottle of salad dressing that layers out

there is so much B.S. and unknown factors in repetive replies at this site about what is going on. Who in the world "REALLY" knows what the "TRUTh".......In other words, what is fiction and fact probably 99.9% of will never KNOW! The Government and Big Industry like this go hand in hand in lying to the masses.

Actually when you don't hear anything from offshore things are usually going good. When things go south, you hear right away (24/7).
