Gas prices US vs UK....

I live in the UK and was pondering the reasons for the big differences in gas prices here compared to the US.

Can anyone explain to me why in Britain we pay £1.20 per litre for petrol ($6.94 per gallon for gas), when the US pays roughly £0.44p per litre ($2.60 per gallon)? Thats 3 times as much in Britain compared to the US! Seems crazy, considering other consumer goods aren't that inflated...(well house prices are, but I understand the supply/demand issue there).

£0.76 or roughly 63% of the fuel price is accounted for by taxes. I read on the net that much of this tax goes towards maintenance of roads and highways, and just general tax revenue. But how did the Brits let it get this out of control - is this a product of a more "socialized" culture?

When I was in London last, it seemed like everything cost the same. For example a pint of beer would be 3 pounds and a pint in the U.S would be three dollars. However, the exchange rate is about 2 to 1. So I was paying 6 dollars a beer. The gas price in the Baton Rouge is $2.75 so double that is $5.50. You are getting killed in taxes.

PM Brown hiking taxes more, even when the government pockets $4.42 from each gallon sold.

If we don't keep gas cheap, how are the illegals going to afford to cruise around?

So it looks like 100% of it is taxes

Don't worry, they'll keep going up here as well

im not sure that is really the case, per capita...sure the cars are smaller and more fuel effecient - but there are a lot of cars on the road here.

i think the british public has just let the government get away with it...I just dont understand how they let them run away with it THAT much...double the price of US fuel, id maybe understand, TRIPLE is hard to believe...

Isn't there an upcoming boycott of gas stations planned in protest of the taxation etc?

re: Gas prices US vs UK....

there have been sporadically, but they dont really and an effect...and the frustrating thing is, that the big national election is coming up next week, and it hasnt even been something that has been brought up as an issue...

the are having a debate tonight regarding the economy here, but people just seem to accept it, which is quite sad i think.

i guess years of socialism and high govt taxation have made them numb.
