i don't venture out here that often, but i really have one thing burning in the back of my mind (it really got intense after reading the ben wilkerson thread on page 1)

what is the future/impact of billy gonzalez here at LSU?

i am still of the belief that he was brought here to fix our option game and bring more of the UF spread option to LSU. crowton is a former spread guru, but his over-used of the option has been a disaster. crowton can't coach, sheme, or call it

UF is a running team based around the option. their passing game is very elementary and mostly a play off their running threat.

if gonzo is the heir apparent at OC for LSU, do we see a radical shift to the UF-style offense?

or, are we going to ask gonzo to "learn" the true spread under crowton, and then be the anti-crowton (go from spread option to trying to incorporate the spread, where crowton is a spread guy trying to learn the spread option)?

is it possible that if crowton goes/is fired, gonzo isn't retained? this seems to be unlikely. too big of a PR hit in florida (i think other than being a running-game coach, gonzo was hired to recruit florida...a big "duh")

Depending on the performance of our offense this year, if it still struggles (god I hope not) then I see Crowton gone mid season and Billy G stepping up.

If Miles has another bad season, he will be ushered out with the rest of the coaching staff.

I really do not understand what is so special about Gonzo. Florida had a pretty horrible passing game last year with a former Heisman winner at QB.

He was their WR coach, why is that mostly his fault?

I think it takes 6 or fewer wins for Miles himself to lose his job... sucky offensive performance definitely means Crowton is gone but Miles would buy at least one more year if he fired Crowton

Of course the pressure on Miles will be pretty high if the team looks less than impressive (smell test matters as much as W/L maybe)... but I don't think he's likely to lose his job this year

It seems like the way is definitely being paved for a future of BG as OC and BW as OL coach.

I think he was hired to develop some misdirection/ spread option stuff and then pass off that. And recruit. Maybe teach the WRs how to grab jerseys and get away with it. After that, who knows. I've never really believed he was brought in to be some shadow OC.

I don't know that I can answer your questions about his future and titles, but from what I've seen at practice, he is very much in control of the passing drills. Crowton sometimes defers to Billy, and Billy it would appear is teaching the basics of route running all over to the receivers, involving the quarterbacks at times as well. He's always emphasizing sticking your cuts, and blocking by receivers.

He's very hands on, more so than any other coach out here, and always communicating with the receivers. I think he was brought in to bring new ideas and energy to an offense that is stale. Same thing for Wilkerson.

Now does that translate to the game field, we still need to wait and see, unfortunately I don't think you will see it this weekend in the spring game.

I'm not saying that Gonzo is the greatest thing since sliced bread...but he is a big upgrade over what we had. He brings much more to the table than just a standard position coach...He is also contributing to the offense as a whole. It's ignorant to use Florida's passing offense from last year to measure his coaching ability for several reasons. As it was stated above, Florida is a running team that utilizes a basic passing scheme. Tebow did not win the Heisman because of his arm. And, WR was probably the weakest/thinest position for Florida last year in terms of talent...I thought they did well with what they had though.

I seriously doubt that Gonzales was@brought in to install the exact same run-oriented option offense that Florida runs, simply bc we don't have a qb like Tebow. JJ can run a little, but he's not a runner. The other 2 qb's aren't runners.

They will utilize some of what Florida does, but JJ isn't going to be running the ball much.

I think Shep really does have a lot to do with the mutual interest between BG and LSU. I'm not going to bring up the guy that is compared ad fricking nauseum to Shep, but I think we ultimately realized we HAVE to have someone here to utilize the type of talent that we have. Shep is the main guy that is always mentioned but if you think about it we have underutilized MANY similar style of players here in the past few years. Crowton has no idea how to play to the strengths of the particular athletes we have at LSU at the skill positions and it shows.

I don't think this question can be answered until we see the type of offense run during the season.. and at that time we can form a reasonable assessment of what Gonzalez's role within the team actually is.

Dude went 9-3 last year with an abismally performing squad. He's going nowhere, so get used to it.

Gonzales got passed over as o-cood. at UF. He got pissed at Meyer and figured he'd show him by going to LSU.

i'm not going to lie i'm worried about this

we hired a passing game coordinator from an option team. that is scary to me

i hope it was urban who held him back

i definitely figured this

Good coaches get the best out of the talent of their players. Crowton's biggest failure over the past 2 years has been his inability to fully utilize the talent that LSU has. Whether this is beacuse his schemes are too complex for anyone other than a 5th year senior QB or lack of OL play or whatever--he has failed.
Looking at Florida the past several years I don't think anyone ever said "Wow, they don't use Harvin/Demps/Tebow like they should".
It was reported that Miles looked around at other OC in the offseason, and whether he couldn't find anyone better or due to $$ did not make a change. IMO he did the next best thing- get someone from the Fla offensive coaching staff to help us utilize the talent better.
The fact that BG comes from a different "style" of spread is not that big of a deal to me. Better coaching can only help. The only question is whether the complexity/bonehead play calls continues or whether this REALLY makes Crowton change his stripes.
My hope it that it does and we go 11-1 and a shot at the SEGCG/BCS.

Everytime we get someone new he becomes the best coach ever on this board. I don't expect to see much new from our offense at all. The talent level is the same. If he was so great he would be a HC by now.
